4.0 or 4.6?

Hello to you all, new 'girl on the block' here! I am looking for my 1st Range Rover here in deepest forgotten lincolnshire to use for dogs, horses and general 4x4 fun. Looking at 1998-2001 4.0 or 4.6 to convert to LPG - would rather convert myself for peace of mind- Any advice on what will be the better buy or any big probs any of you know about. ALL advice welcome before i hand over my hard earned cash!

HI Helfire21,ihad the same question about 4-5 months ago.I tried a 4.0 and it was fine very smooth and pick up seemed good.however i was told to try a 4.6 first before paying out.I am gald i did because there is a diff in the way the 4.6 picks up over the 4.0.the mpg for me is fine(17-23)but if you use the 4.6 hard mybe only10-12.I have had mine 4 months now and this forum is A1 for help... I have the 4.6 2001 MOD.and love it to death.

people ive spoke to in teh car trade dont like the 4.6 cos its a bored out 4.0 and can therefore suffer more enigne problems cos the block is weaker

they prefer to trade the 4.0

not sure you would really notice much difference

Ive got a 4.0 - but it wasnt so much a concious effort to get the 4.0 - more that my mate had had it from new and it was a minter at a good price (mates rates)

Your people in the "trade" dont know their subject - 3.9 RRc and the 4.0,4.6 p38's all share the same bore size - 94mm.The 4.6 has a longer stroke crank,which in my opinion is too long,a well set up 4.0 is much more pleasant to use.You can chip the earlier Gems ones if the 4.0 is not quick enough.The later Bosch injected engines run more like a modern OHC unit,but the 4ltr is usually smoother.

you need to know a decent independant if you go for either.
personally I would go for a post 2000 4.6 with fsh as low miles as ya can get.
The block/ liner problem is your worst fear cost wise.
eas can be troublesome unless its in top order, though you can convert to coils at reasonable cost if ya want .

I dont want to put you off a RR as they are superb, but the 38a can be a costly machine to run and could break your heart as well.

Take someone with you that knows these RR's well, and look at lots first.
A search in this bit will give you loads a info.

Have you considerd a disco 200/300 or td5?, might suit you better for dogs n osses!

I bought a 1998 4.6 RR and it was nothing but grief problem after problem I bought it from a dealer with a guarantee which was a good thing,in the end the dealer ended up taking it back off me.The brother-in-law as a 2000 4.0 RR and its been fantastic no trouble at all.I have now got a Td5 disco which drives really nice no probs only leaky sunroof? hope this helps,this is only my experience and I am no expert.

I have a 4.6 and a 4.0 both 2001 models both fantastic vehicles neither has ever given me any problems 4.6 now has 21,000km and drives like new 4.0 has 80,000 miles and drives like new.
The only differences I have noticed is the 4.6 is faster on take-off and top speed but I only found that out because I wanted to see the difference - most of us in our normal usage would never notice the difference.
The 4.6 is slightly more economical like for like driving 20-22 as oposed to 18-20. Buy whichever is the better car (judgemental decision - take someone experienced with you). Covert to LPG - your approach is the right one do it yourself. BTW I've had both of mine from new - NEVER had ANY problems

OOPS! 4.6 has 210,000 kilometers not 21,000.

I got the 4.0SE, 'cause What Car said it was the best one to get for all round use, fuel/power Eqmt.

Thanks to Ivor Deenie and Phil (& to all that've replied!) Am now thinking of a TD5 ES as others have said the same - any more advice greatfully recieved!
