I don't believe it!

Last week I was washing the hippo.

Noticed the roof rail on the drivers side, (it was hard not to) 150mm crack along the join.

I'm baffled by this, its not on any of the major stress points or harness points. This has only appeared in the last few months, haven't carried any stuff on the rack for ages.

Another quality component from LR

TBH its about the last thing you would expect to go, I have had well above the recommended weight of 65kg on that rack,

someone has even modified the standard rack on their 3dr so there are rails similar to the 5dr, with 2 of those types on each side. There is no reason why that rack system shouldnt take more weight.

Won't have pics up till Monday, It's on the vertical section.

I can only guess that water has got in from the cross member bolts and gradually corroded it along the seam.

It just so happens, I was removing the hard top to seal a leak, yes they leak, cause it was buit in three sections!

Then I spotted the split, gap is 2mm, metal is well oxidised where the split is.

Not sure how I'm gonna reinforce it, a couple of bolts through it, with some sort of strap acting like a buttress either side of the tube.

In some fairness to Land Rover I should think parts like this are made by outside contactors, it is their quality control that is not up to scratch.

Andy.

thanks for the warning NI, I regularly have big ladders and stuff on the roof. After seeing "Police, Stop, You're Nicked Slag" the other night, where they (quite rightly) turned the guy over for losing his ladders on the M6, I shall have a careful check every time I use them.

Roughly what sort of year are we talking ?

Please TC, are you telling me that LR are passing the buck, they endorse the part on their vehicles, if they are worthy of several Royal crests, I'd like to think they endorse qualty components........

and they are sold as genuine LR accessories.

I quote:

"As with the vehicles themselves, Land Rover Genuine Accessories must undergo stringent quality and performance testing, after all they are part of the vehicle.......
......Heavy duty accessories such as tow bars are subjected to rig testing where up to 2 million load cycles are replicated to ensure the inherent strength of design"

Think I've found your problem NI. It looks like you've used your roof bars 2,000,001 times, clearly in excess of the 2 million load cycles.

A few years ago I did a job to Stains, Heathrow taking plastic parts manufactured on Anglesey for shipment to SAAB in Sweden, I take it that Land Rover will be doing the same but from a diffrent source? Hence quality control.

Damn it I knew I was using that rack too much.

The FL was new in JAN 01, pre-reg Dec 00

Finally sussed how to uoload pics from my phone, judge for yourselves, quality part or not?

Even the inner side of the rail appears to be blistering from the inside.
