Ok guys, quick question - is the 300tdi in factory fit Range rover classic the same as the discovery engine or the defender engine? (or maybe neither!) Suggests what donors might work...

Thanks!

Someone may correct me, but i don't think classic ever had a 300 TDI engine. 200 TDI was the classic motor i think.

Stand corrected then. Thought the P38 RangeRover II came in in 1995 and production of classics ceased in that year. I had a 94 Disco with the 200 TDI then a 95 fitted with 300 TDI did not think that engine came in until 1995. Someone will know the proper story no doubt.
.

The Classic soft dash definately came with a 300TDI, I had one of the last with an auto box. It is the same as the one fitted to the later mk2 disco.

The very last "soft dash" Classics had the 300. I think there may subltle differences betwix defender and disco engines, but generaly they are the same.

I was looking at buying one a couple of years ago (auto) but couldn't find a reasonable mileage example at the right price. As soon as I wasn't looking up came a couple at brilliant price/mileage combos. They do exist, funnily enough more commonly than 200tdi Rangies probably because they stuck with that VM crap for so long before finally seeing sense.

I think all the soft dash diesels were 300tdi. Can't imagine there was any difference between disco and classic.
There is a section on RR.net that goes through all the changes year by year. I think the 200tdi came in in 1990 and the 300tdi in 1993

Got to believe what more informed are saying, but i had a L reg 1994 Disco with a 200 TDI motor. Then got a 1995 M reg with 300 TDI motor so i thought that 300 TDI started in 1995. Bit of a baffler then?

Sorry about that, what I meant to say was I didn't think there was any difference in the 300tdi fitted to the disco compared to that fitted to the RRC. I've no idea what year they changed over engines in the disco.

For what its worth, a lot of Defender guys claim the 200tdi was a better engine than the 300. I had a 200tdi 92 RRC and thought the engine was great so if you do come across a softdash 200tdi snap it up. But I've never seen one.
Also I'd say a 300tdi auto would be fairly sluggish.

On your L reg, doesn't that happen a bit where they run out older models? My (pre Irish reg)T reg P38 is a 98 MY.

Just checked it out on RR.net

They say the softdash came out in March 1994.
As its US info they say nothing about diesel but that would tie in with Wammers 94 200tdi Disco.

I think your right, the auto is sluggish but apparently it's better than the disco version. If memory serves the disco was supposed to be 18 seconds 0-60 whereas the rangie was under 17 seconds. Think it might have had something to do with a lighter bodyshell.
