Hi i have just fit a recon 300tdi to my defender and it is smoking a lot moore than my old unit the smoke is a whitey colour not the usaul black is the timing out or is the engin not been built correctly any advice

If its recon then the pump has probaly been set to the factory standard which is pants to be honest. Be carefull if you advance it though as any warranty may be void.

Is it under powered, struggling to rev or lumpy? Sounds like pump timing could be out, have a play with advancing/retarding the timing and see if that has an affect on the smoke...

Yeh it feels under powerd almost flat the turbo is boosting but the revs layber if that makes any sence

Playuing with the pump timing is easy and fairly safe, remove the small cover on the front thats held on with 3 screws, losen off the 3 retaining bolts on the pulley (do not remove them, just undo 1/2 turn, they are pinch bolts) and retard (turn anticlockwise) the pulley by a few mm, tighten up and start the engine, if this improves it then go a bit further untill it gets worse, then move forward, trial and error basically... im sure there are many guides that will show this better than I am explaining it...
