Actually, I just came back from the local tip (sorry recycling station) with the back full to the roof with junk and a trailer full on the back. There is a steep hill on the way and I noticed it steamed up in 5th and had plenty more to give! When I get a bit of time I would like to take the inlet off and clean it out as CharlesY suggested. Is it then also worth taking the intercooler off too and giving that a clean? I think the intercooler is before the exhaust gets injected in though. I did notice that when I revved it, the EGR emitted a cloud of soot at one point. I think that because its not on the exhaust anymore, the boost pressure on the inlet is a lot more than atmospheric so it opened under pressure? The vacuum pipe and electric plug are disconnected. I am off on a 700 mile round trip at the end of the week so we'll see how she goes!

When I did mine at 117k Miles the inter cooler was fairly clean, it was the inlet manifold that was full of marmite.

Most ordinary BORING people take their stuff TO the tip, and they do this so INTERESTING people like us can collect the good stuff and take it away free.

This place is well organised and you are allowed to bring stuff and dump it for free. You are most definitely NOT allowed to rummage through and take stuff away!

still waiting for the garage to pick the car up today but believe they are going to meet the full cost of a new timing cover i'll keep it posted what happens

Well, I took the pipe off that the EGR feeds into (sorry KMG - still Hijacking :)), The one thats about 55mm in diameter and goes between the intercooler and the intake manifold. It was full of orrible black slimy gunge - Jason called it 'marmite' yuk! (what is it? its oily which is a worry), anyway, I replaced it with an 8" length of scaffold tube which I had sprayed black and it looks the part. However, would I be better off getting a length of the correct diameter hose and going straight to the intake from the intercooler with it as I have dropped to the internal diameter of the scaff tube which I reckon can only be 40mm at best. Will this have a negative effect?
 
what should the internal diameter and the length of the pipe be? I haven't got my car to measure at the moment but I can order some silicone hose off ebay ready for when she returns so i can drop the whole EGR off.

the garage has ordered a new timing cover from landrover today so she should hopefully be running again by friday, luckily at their expense.:D
 
Well, I measured the pipe I took off (the one with the egr mounted on it) and its 2" or about 52mm in diameter. I stuck a piece of scaffold tube in for now which seems to be working. Had a quick look on ebay and havent seen the hose yet. (not for £10 anyway) will keep looking. Dont forget you need a plate for the exhaust manifold as well. I found a piece of 1/8" plate and drilled it and put it on. I had to use a couple of washers as the plate was thinner than the EGR. Also you need to blank off the vacuum pipe. I did it by sticking a screw in the end of the rubber hose then doubling it over and keeping it in place with a cable tie.
Hope you get going by the weekend anyway.
 
any chance you could measure the entire length of the steel pipe plus the two flexible hoses to get an overall length for a single piece of hose?
it would be greatly appreciated, I might even forgive you for the hijack lol
 
I reckon you would need 15" piece to go direct from the intercooler to the intake. I am not happy with the scaff pipe as I think its too narrow and has kinked the rubber hoses. I have sawed off the EGR assy from the original pipe and will clean it up thoroughly and MIG weld a patch over the hole where the EGR was. I will probably go for the silicone hose idea but I am driving 350 miles on saturday so dont want the risk of having any problems.
 
Looks like it might fit. I'm not going to get it before saturday though as I'm going away. I am not too confident with the scaff pipe job so in the meantime will re hash the original pipe and put it back.

Personaly think that you will be OK with your scaff pipe as a temp fix.I have driven back from the south of France before now with a totaly collapsed intercooler pipe, loss of power yes but not the end of the world:)

the cheapest silicone hose I've found on ebay is around £15 for half a metre but when you compare to some websites, thats fairly cheap.
 
kmg - where are yu based? change ya cp to show the area yu are in. I have some surplus straight silicone hose, but £30 a metre is about right. I does depend, of course on the shape and diameter required.

Just checked - mine is 38mm so no good to ya. - Silicone hose is expensive - but it is a "buy once" item.
 
I took the original steel pipe that had a branch for the EGR on it to work. Sawed the EGR off and ground it flat and MIG welded a patch over it and sprayed it black. Its back on the Disco now and looks like it grew there!
