Good evening chaps,

While sorting out some unrelated fuel pump problems, I've noticed the my 1996 Discovery 300TDi is fitted with the "wrong" engine timing gears, as explained in this article.

My timing belt pulleys have the raised shoulder guides on the tensioner, and none on the crankshaft gear. However, the belt was changed 20,000 miles ago and there are no visible signs of wear to the belt, in fact it looks as good as new.

Do you think it would be a good idea to purchase the Repair Option kit 1, (STG 4095K) as reccommended by Land Rover, or do you think that if it doesn't appear to be a problem, to leave it alone?

Note that I have discovered the crankshaft seal behind the crankshaft gear to be leaking oil, so I will need to remove this anyway in order to fit a new seal.

I am reluctant to spend money I don't need to, but on the other hand perhaps the timing belt is the one place where corners should not be cut..

Well if its running straight and true i would leave it as is, but when you have got it down for the new seal i would fit a new belt saves hassle in the future.
What happens when its duff is the belt moves of the pulleys and rubs on the front cover wearing the belt away until it gets so thin it snaps.

I wonder how many owners have found this on their timing covers?
Where the repair kits have been used workshops have been instructed by Land Rover for apply 22 cm square of yellow paint to the upper left side of the timing cover.

you need lhp100860 tensioner and lhh100660 crank pulley to put belt system right next time you do belt ,if it was going to go it would have done it long ago

I think I'll just fit a new belt and check it in a few weeks time to make sure everything's alright.

I remember an article years ago where someone got a groove milled into the front timing chest cover when they did their cambelt so they could check if the belt was running out of line, by removing a cover just for a visual look.

Hi, not all 300 tdi engines were affected by the out of allignment issue so if yours is runing streight and true then just a belt is the way forward ! dont fix if it aint broken !!

Well it turns out you can't simply swap the tensioner and crank pulley for the newer ones. Apparently they protrude more than the old ones, and therefore a revised timing case cover is needed as well in order for them to fit correctly!

The kit was just over £100, so I thought feck that and boxed it up with just a new timing belt.

I've made a nifty crank pulley locking tool now, so it should be easy enough to whip the cover back off in a couple of thousand miles for a quick visual inspection..

Fingers crossed!

Thats a cheap kit as im sure the one with the timing chast and the inj pump support bracket was well over 40 quid but this was a few years ago.
The kit with just the new crank and tensioner pulleys was over 80 quid

hi i have a 98 discovery that was running fine after changing belt but once filters were changed the next day it started a couple of times then now only if pump unions are undone even then only sometimes will it start any ideas please

sucking air in .check lift pump, sedimentor behind chassis reard drivers wheel and pipes entering tank unit under inspection plate in boot floor, sedimentor is worth bypassing as its not needed lh side pipe on tank to inside pipe on chassis in front of sedimentor ,lift pumps are nearly allways faulty it shows when system been disturbed
