Right, here goes.... Head gasket blew on my disco a couple of weeks ago, overheated and blew all of the water out of the header tank. Anyway, I had the head skimmed and replaced the head gasket with a 3 notch one (2 notch previously), not sure how much they took off of the head but must have been about 0.3mm judging by how much I had to adjust the rockers, which means the compression ratio will be slightly higher. I've been driving it steady, 2500RPM max since the work, but a couple of days ago I noticed a ticking that got faster the more I increased the revs, only when under load. Is this likely to be the head gasket again and what is the thickest gasket I can get to make up the deficit? There's no unusual temp changes, no mayo on the oil filler etc.

A ticking on mine was traced to the exhaust manifold stud nearest the bulkhead missing .. ;) Only heard under load and sounded like a mechanical tapping that got louder under load, just like a tappet sound. When in the engine bay and stood almost nothing could be heard and no gases seen near it.

Thanks Paul, I hope it's that. It's a much cheaper and easier fix than doing the head again! I'll have a look later.

had the same on my 200 tdi in jan, thought it was the manifold ,got louder over 3 weeks and turned out to be the head gasket gone right at the back of the head,no loss of power,no loss of water etc luckily a **** easy job on the 200 and only took a couple of hours .. hope its yr exhaust m8

Here's an update on the tick tock disco clock. Checked all of the manifold bolts, all were tight.... bugger!! Re-checked all of the valve clearances, all ok. Then decided to put the engine under some load (3rd gear, handbrake on, slipping the clutch at 2250rpm) after 3 attempts at this, a very warm recently fitted HD clutch and a ploom of smoke in the air, we finally decided that the injector on no.4 pot wasn't seated properly. A tweek on all injector clamps saw the problem solved! :):)

Just another new clutch to fit and we're away!
