Hi all. Well the weekend is here at last and I am after some devine guidance.

Replaced the head gasket on my Disco 300 tdi and after putting it all back together the engine is misfiring and chucking out blue smoke.

I thought i'd set the tappets but I really do not think that I have got it quite right.

Can anyone tell me what the correct gap setting is and fool proof way of setting them properly?

Cheers one and all.

8 thou ,and you need to watch valve opening and stop as soon as its fullt open (rocker stops moving for split second ) if you go past that point keep going till another valve is just fully open, set gap on what ever number valve is fully open to add uo to nine ie 3 open set 4 open set 5 etc number 1 been at front of engine ,mark each one as you set it as they dont go in 1 to 8 order

You can turn the engine over using a socket on the alternator bolt so that you can watch the tappets move (open/close) and yep good tip about the tipex. I put a small spot on the rocker when i have done the gap so you can see easily if you have done em all.

No mate, you set them fully closed, as guru has said, if #1 valve is fully down (open) you set #8. It's called rule of 9. So when #2 is fully down (open) you set #7. #3 set #6. #4 set #5 etc

Brilliant, thank you. That makes sense now.

I basically went from front to back setting them all at 0.2mm as they were closed.
i.e when they became loose on the cam.

Sunday update:
Engine running quite nicely, except an air lock in the water which will not shift.

Misfire was due to a rogue valve cap lodged down in the pushrod tube and stopping the cam lifter returning onto the cam.
Very strong telescopic magnet and a gentle push on an old pushrod retrieved it.

Thank you everyone for your help and assistance. Much appreciated.
