300TDi Squeeling belt 'Penny Trick'

So i tried the penny trick last night and it seemed to work, however when I tried tightening the bolt back up again, it wouldnt tighten and now the thread in the hole is non-existant!!

Looks like i will have to re-thread the hole and then get a fatter bolt to hold the tensioner in place. My only concern is having to drill out the hole in the tensioner to enable me to put a fatter bolt through!

Any thoughts? Or is there anyone in Hertfordshire that fancies having a look??

All sorted, had to get down to Andy at AJD Land Rover to stick a thread insert in. Belt no longer squeeks though but ended up costing me a hell of a lot more than 1p...

Many thanks for this, brilliant bit of diagnosis by OP.

For me the penny was too large a shim and took the 'trueness' too far.
Diagnosed by a shot of WD40 on one side of the belt and then the other. Turns out I need a couple thou' at 9 o'clock position instead.

Again, cheers for this - no more annoying chattering noise.

I had mine MOT'd via AJD a couple of weeks ago and mentioned the penny trick to them - they said they'd never heard of it and it could make the fan belt slide off over time. Anyway, we found that one of belt tensioners was stuck and once that had been replaced it fixed the squealing but then my wallet started making a horrible squeaking noise...

How will it make it slide off when it's bringing into true? A squealing belt is being stressed and will fail quicker.

Hundreds of 300tdi owners have followed this guide with no sliding off issues reported

The whole point of the penny is to fix the alignment issues which is causing the squeal.

Sounds like garage just trying to make you spend money.

Sorry I've had this problem for ages, I've changed the tensioner bearing greased tensioner spring and was about to order water pump, by chance I got grease on pulley belt from many on off's with the belt to find the fault that it stopped. Since then I've grease the tensioner belt and never had the squeeky back yet. The belt is under a lot of tension so does not slip.

Had the same issue when i bought my disco recently, greased up the tensioner bearing. It did the trick for a while or it was not as noisy. Changed the bearing yesterday, but it still made a noise. Guessing one squeal was masking another. Done the penny trick this morning, could see the tensioner wheel was slightly out of square. Squeal now gone and i can drive with the window down :clap2:

Just done the penny trick today, it stopped the chirping but I saw the tensioner still had a droop, I then found out that the bearing is totally knackered, so a little more costly than a penny but I'm glad I read about it on here.

Thanks a million! its been doing my head in! by the way works with a 5 euro cent coin to! not many pennies in andalucia.

What is the part number of the bearing? The bearing has started to squeal on my Disco and I would like to be able to source the bearing locally, rather than wait for it to arrive from England.
