300TDi Squeeling belt 'Penny Trick'

I have owned my Discovery for about 2 months now and have heard this squeaking in the mornings when letting the car warm up a bit.

If the drive belt is the least bit slack, it will tend to skid and SQUEAL right after a cold start because the load and DRAG on the Alternator is very high as it tries to keep the system voltage up to par, about 14 volts or so.

Once the battery voltage is up, the alternator has less work to to, so the drag is less, and it tends not to skid and squeal.
 
Hi guys, have been lurking on here for a while doing some research. Have a 1996 110 CSW and have now adopted the penny trick, what a change a big thanks to Battenberg for the info life is more peaceful now

squeeling belt??

The penny trick:
  1. remove belt
  2. back of the single stud holding in the tensioner
  3. put a penny in the 9 o'clock position
  4. tighten back up, put belt back on.

The UK penny measures 1.65mm-1.70mm-the euro 1 cent small copper coin measures~1.63mm-so very similar,although smaller in diameter.hth

I have just tried that trick out, but with a slightly thinner brass washer, and "Hey Presto" no more squeaking! Thanks so much for these and other really helpful posts.
This really is a great forum and you guys make garage mechanics seem irrelevant!

Worked for me thanks,
Changed tensioner bearing last week with no effect and the water pump the week before when doing the timing belt.
I can only assume the belt runs at and angle across the tensioner pulley face causing the squeek and this mod lines it all up. The belt can't jump off as the grooved pulleys either side of the tensioner are so close and hold the belt in line.
Fingers crossed it lasts :))

I'd just like to add my "thanks" for this tip as well. My 300tdi developed a squeak and after changing the belt (it was due a change anyway) which made no difference I then tried swapping the tensioner. This seemed to work for a few days but then it came back.

I then stumbled upon this post! Curiously it didn't work on the new tensioner but in a flash of inspiration I took the old one down from the shelf (tip - never throw anything away) and tried putting the penny behind this one and hey-presto, silence has returned.

My theory as to why it sounds like the water pump squeaking (I was all-but ready to buy a new water pump) is that this is closest to the tensioner so if the tensioner isn't quite 'true' it'll be the next pully along that is affected the most.

ha yehup i bought a new water pump when i had a squeal i bought a new tentioner im lucky its quiet for two years but will definately try the penny trick
