300TDI rough running in higher rpms

Should I just give up and drive a Fiat 500

You caught that just in time, belt failiure could have caused significant damage and head off again.

ive ordered a kit gonna give it a go tomorrow or Friday , if I can find the right tools I’m really struggling to find one off those

i have a chalk board In the garage and jot things on it as I find them. I have 3 columns. 1 - routine maintenance plans for the year (cambelt etc) 2 - need to be fixed pronto column (wheel bearings rumbling, propshaft squeak etc) and the third column is minor stuff some of which has been on there for yonks like ‘Tighten up wing mirror’ :D

If you had seen my defender the list is endless

I did Manage to find some from eBay but they would only arrive Friday and that’s even if our post is normal , I live on. Anew build estate and the post man just can’t be bothered coming for days / weeks at a time , I’ve found one on Amazon that’s basically the same that’ll be delivered Friday and in the mean time I’ll be checking local tool shops to see if they had any

Update timing kit done everything has been swapped out and I’m running again however we now have white smoke , I’m positive the timing was perfect

I’ve managed to get it all fitted today I’ve got a little bit of smoke and Un burnt diesel smell I was positive the timing was perfect , could be I need to finally wife up the glow plugs this was never an issue before

White smoke and unburnt derv says to me pump timing is to retarded.
You can advance the injector pump timing a little bit which should clear up the smoke.
Basically advance the inj pump timing a knatts cock at a time, you know if you have gone to far as you get diesel knock under load.
Only way to be 100 percent correct is a dti gauge, but even then engines are like people, fickle and a tweak outside of the design parameters helps a lot.

Glows should not make any difference unlike on modern cars, but as it costs nowt to try?

I’m gonna go out tomorrow morning and have another play because I can adjust that timing with completely taking everything to bits again the car is 100% better than this morning I’ve just not got it dialled in to be perfect again , looks like I’m back in the boring car for a while

Even with the crank locked by the pin there is still movement, I always rock the crank as far as it will go one way, then the same the other way, then stick it in the middle for the timing check.

Both my 200 white smoke from cold, especially if left to idle, but soon clear if left idling, and if driven straight from cold start no white smoke is noticed.

Yeah I noticed that why wouldn’t the tool be made to take up the complete space so there is no chance of it being done wrong ,

a little white smoke like yours I wouldn’t mind but this is clouds of white smoke it’s definitely diesel as I went to smell and it burnt my insides and eyes so I’m not entirely worried anymore when I was timing up the pin was tight so that’s probably my issue , I haven’t give it chance to heat up yet I probably had it running for 10 minutes and it didn’t get past 30c but even so there shouldn’t be clouds

I had white smoke on my boat and eye watering diesel fumes, new inj pump (Bosch VE) and injectors fitted for previous owner by marine engineer, he must have just used the timing marks/pins, again they have play same as tdi.

I’ve just had a read thro that I think a dti gauge is in order if I can’t get the timing right , I will still try to fix the timing in the mean time.
