I have a decent 97 Auto 300TDI with 121,000miles but have been offered a good 99 TD5 Auto with 97,000 miles and am undecided wether to have a change or not. Both are good motors, but would I be stepping up changing to a TD5, or would I be buying more future problems. Anybody experienced both motors. ??? Which is best, Thanks in advance. Mick.

a year or 2 ago i would have said 300 every time but but i was sucked in buy cheep td5 and now i would never change back to a 300 still use a 300 disco at work but the td5 is loads better
but MOST 300 parts a cheeper than td5

Ive got a 97 300 auto myself. Talking to other disco users both 300 and TD5 I believe that if you get a bad TD5 then things just go from bad to worse and problems never stop, parts are expensive and they arnt so easy to work on yourself but, if you get a good one then, like Martin said above you'll not go back. Personally I'd stick with the 300, why try fix something that aint broke????

Is your current Tdi 300 doing all you want done? I yes, keep it and enjoy.

You know the saying "Better the devil you know etc etc etc"

Cheers & relax, Tdi 300's rule !!!!!!

hi there,i had both but the uses were varied,my 97 tdi was a commercial and i treadted it dog rough, towing my 3t digger and tools around and appart from normal maintenancenothing else was done to her, then my 00 td5 was a 7 seater hse, beautiful in every way,but very tempramental on the suspension but once that was sorted she was a stunner(kingston brown).
if you just going to cruise around then get the td5 sounds not too bad but do look around there is a hell of a lot around and i think 99-01 is falling in the lesser tax bracket, fuel economy is a bit more heavier but you have more power to play with.
the tdi as you know is the workhorse, and just gets on with things...
tough call though....
good luck

i got both a 300 and a TD5...

you gotta ask yourself what you want from it??

My 300 is a play thing, My TD5 a long range comfort machine which is equaly as good off road .. with all it's electrickery.

300 part are cheap and readily available, TD5 not so many aftermarket parts slightly more pricey.

given the choice id prefer to drive the TD5 for it's engine power and refinement, but given any breakdown i'd prefer it to be the 300, 'cos you need a spanner not a laptop to sort it out...

Thanks for everyones input, I have decided to stick with the devil you know, my 300 Tdi. It seems it will do everything I want it to do without all the tecnicality when repairs do come along. Thanks again Mick.;)

Having had 2 300 Tdi's and now have a 2001 Td5 I think battenberg sums it up very well . My brother bought my last 300Tdi ES from me and I drive it from time to time . His work means he spends a lot of time driving on rough forest roads which have been ploughed up by lorries etc - but he has never got stuck yet ( but had a few close calls ).
All my driving is on tarmac but I have really got to like the Td5 - faster , smoother etc but still very much a Land Rover .
