Was out in my 300tdi defender today and it was running fine and then it just cut out. There was no warning at all. One minute it was running fine and then nothing. I can't work out if the fuel pump has failed.should there be a wire to the solenoid on the pump.lift pump is working fine and I can get fuel to the pump but on cranking the engine there is no fuel getting to the injectors.has anyone had a problem like this before. Any information would be very useful as not sure whether to take the pump off and get it tested.

Put a battery positive to the solonoid on the back of the fuel pump or check that its got a live with the ignition tuned on. if it still wont start change the solonoid its the most likely problem

IIRC, the fuel pump solonoid, has a plunger that opens to let the engine run, closes to stop (electric version of the old manual strangle). If you remove the solonoid, and remove the plunger, refit the solonoid, less plunger. It should start, if so the solonoid is faulty, you'll have to stall the engine to stop it.

Would that definitely mean that it's not the pump? Had to get towed home as could not get fixed.
