I'm building up courage to do the timing belt on my disco 1 300 tdi. I had a mechanic do the last one and I know it had the new modified crank pulley fitted. Do I need to buy a kit that includes a new modified pulley, or will the old one still be ok? There's no bearing in it to wear out, from what I can gather, it's just driven by the crankshaft.
Also, any tips for my first attempt at this job?
Thanks in advance.

If you have the 'modded' crank pulley with the built-in shoulders, there's no need to change it.
I would perhaps change one that had the old style spot welded sides as they can separate, but only really when the belt starts running on the ****.

Check out Island 4x4 for details of the modified kit of parts. You can buy all of them separately. The job is not difficult on the 300tdi, but you will need a way of holding the crank still to undo and do up the bolt.

Also,

Check out you tube there are a couple of good videos on there showing the 300tdi timing belt change.
Follow the steps in rave, be careful of the torque for the idler stud.
Having a pin set does make life easier , but there are ways to do it stnd in parts.

Do a search on here, there are lots of useful points about doing this job.

Cheers

note:

A cam kit will contain a new idler. When the lip was added to the crank sprocket, it was taken away from the idler. So, make sure that you get a cam kit without a lip on the idler (which may be all of them now - i dont know!)

^^ that's a good tip. Still possible to buy all the old unmodified stuff and it's what a lot of general factors supply unless you ask for the late/ modified stuff!
My '95 Discovery still has all the original stuff, but not all of them shredded the belt.
Nevertheless, I'll be doing mine with the latest kit next week..

Thanks for the replies. I bought the new kit last time with the new style crank sprocket and idler pulley, so I know it's got the modified kit on it. I've seen kits without the new crank sprocket and idler pulley, but they also seem to be lacking the tensioner bearing? I want to replace the inner and outer crankshaft seals at the same time, so perhaps buying the parts seperate is the way to go? I've already bought the pin set and have various pullers in my tool kit.
Just feel a bit apprehensive about taking it on. I've done lots on my disco, including cv joints, brake disks, clutch fork and thrust race bearing, etc.

Id kind of be tempted to just get the complete cam belt kit with the new crank sprocket. I think the difference in cost between the kit with the sprocket and without the sprocket is about £7.

I figure, if youre doing the crank seal, that means the old one has had it - and there could be some marking on the sprocket edge as a result. £7 extra, and you can just replace the lot (if it is £7 difference between the kits - it really isnt a lot, im sure)

Ahh - one more point worth mentioning -

When i did the crank seal on mine, you need a 'pusher' to make sure it goes in square - landrover can sell you a £60 tool to do the job...

...but with another sprocket to hand, you can use both sprockets and the crank nut itself as a pusher to push the seal home squarely.

Im sure you could use somthing else too, but i certainly used a couple of sprockets, and it seemed easy enough.

Thanks. The full kit doesn't come with crank seals. Mine were done when the timing belt was last done. Not sure if they're buggered or not.

Yep, i know the kits dont come with the seals - theyre quite expensive to buy also.

Id say that, if its not leaking engine oil, leave the crank sprocket and the seal alone. People do seem to have issues replacing the seal and getting it in properly, so, whilst im not saying you will, if it aint broke, why bother?
