300tdi disco wont really pull in 4th and 5th and lumpy/smokey when started from cold!! have replaced fuel/air filter, cleaned sedimiter/intercooler/hoses. my lift pump wont manualy pump fuel out of bleed on the filter and has no resistance! i take it the lift pump pulls fuel from the tank into the filter when motor is running? how do they break and would it cause these kind of problems? any help would be great as getting bloody fed up now:(:)

The engine has to be in the right postion to operate the lift pump with the lever, try turning it over half a turn (breaker bar with 27mm socket on the pulley nut on the front of the crank shaft) and try again.
I thought when they were giving up you got lack of power when pulling up hill, nothing to do with cold or not

yeah tried turning motor over half a turn and nothing!! def losing power on hills but also 4th and 5th in general unless going down hill! seems to get hard to rev out in 3rd and flat there after!

lift pump could be shot but also look at the sedimentor bowl as it may need cleaning, it's located on the chassis rail to the rear drivers side, also check for splits/leaks in pipe work and also the tank sender unit tends to rust and prevent fuel pulling from the tank to pump.
hope that helps

my bro in law had similar problem, he changed the lift pump coz it was fooked, but problem was still the same,
it turned out to be the fuel sender,
the top pipes corroded but only slightly and it was pulling air in, enough to make it run like crap and pull badly
a new sender unit and it goes like **** off a hot shovel, he just needs to MOT it now
