300tdi into a 90

It's a complete stripdown of the box to change the input shaft just incase you didn't know?
And you'll still need the short bell housing which used to be hard to source and expensive.
I don't know your budget but I would be asking Ashcroft two things..
1) can they convert your disco box to Defender spec and how much? Assuming they have a short bell housing.
2) will they sell you a Defender box without a core unit or take your disco box as a core.
Cheapest option but risky is to get a used box off eBay and hope it's good( or get it reconned before fitting it - not cheap).
Everything would be factory then.
Can you strip/repair boxes? If you can then that's the best way if you can source a short bell housing, everything else is readily available off the shelf.

Must be the only thing I haven't attempted yet lol. Like has been said the defender r380 are hard to source at a reasonable price. Weighing my options up at the minute still. So assuming you use the lt77 box instead would the engine sit in the 300position (I think it doesn't)... It I am splashing out on a 300galv chassis I think finding a defender box or recon with a trade in with ashcroft may be the way forward
 
It's no laughing matter when you need a high pressure pas pipe and despite paddock, island, craddock and LR direct all listing them (ntc6731 I think) and even taking your money they can't actually supply. Exhaust manifold? Yeah right. Turbo? Not a chance unless you've won the lottery. What about a head? So yes, while water pumps and timing kits are aplenty, the bigger more expensive stuff isn't. There's a lot of disco 200 engined defenders out there that look like some school kids put them together as a result, mine included, and all I want is to lift the bonnet and it look factory, without costing the earth and with long lasting spares supply. I stood in paddocks after a 3 week wait to be politely informed by an expert in the market of Land Rover parts that anyone still considering chucking a 200tdi into a defender, be it from a disco or a defender, was daft as a brush because parts specific to a 200tdi are running out.
The thing is, heads and even turbos and exhaust manifolds are not really 'service' items. I mean exactly how many spare 200 tdi heads do you really need to keep in stock, or do you swap them over every other oil change?? ;)

PAS pipes, not really sure the issue here. And if you can't get them, get a local company to make some up, not really rocket science. Had some made for my tdi Series 3 with p38 PAS earlier this year.

Turbo's, like said above. They can be got. Or reconidtioned easily enough and there must be 1000's easily available used ones. Most of which are likely perfectly fine.
 
Right let's be crystal clear the gearboxes are the same BUT the bellhousing, input shaft and selector are different. I think people are mixing up what a gearbox is with a gearbox & bellhousing. Anything can made to fit anything within reason but whether you should or not is a different matter

So yeh who's got a defender bellhousing and input shaft for me?
 
I'm sure this is 300 Into lt77 so the engine sits further back than standard. I'm talking about engine sitting in factory position and so gearbox moves forward and so do the props (hopefully all to factory position) if the gear box is correct and the same as the defender r380
300 tdi engine and transmission sit 2 inches further forward than the lt77 ,disco and defender r380 are the same box ie same length including bell housing its only the selector shaft and yoke plus top that differ, converting an r380 to the short bell housing type that were built by lr to use as a replacement for an lt77 requires the bell housing input shaft as well as release brg guide ,lever pivot etc plus your selector shaft and top converting,personally i prefer to fit 300 as a 300 and alter floor tunnel etc to fit,all parts like exhaust become std 300tdi parts then

I wondered when the main man would make an appearance! I think if I am going to go for a galv and drop a 300 in it I would want it in the standard position.

Engine and gearbox will then be in standard 300Tdi position, with floors/props required to match.
Perfect then! that's the plan! 300tdi galv chassis, find myself a scrap dicso and drop the running gear on that minus props, I can get hold of a td5 seat box I know the drivers side will need changing for the tank to sit under the drive but id rather go that way n sell the def 200 engine in it

good to read through. a nice hour and half of works time killed off! im hoping to fit a 300 in mine and sell the def 200
I used Richards 2.5 n/a chassis and made two plates (1/4 steel plate) to bolt on chassis mount and a hole 4" along to bolt to engine because the disco R380 pushes the engine 4" further forward. Bonous though because all the pipes from the disco fitted without modification and there's a nice gap at the back of engine to fit screen wash tank to keep it warm. As long as you use Defender mounts on transfer box the props fit and you can then bolt whichever gearbox and engine you like to it and sort engine mounts accordingly. Richards will put engine mounts wherever you like but l wanted a standard chassis like the one it was born with. : )
 
Just to confirm if the r380 is the same box and bellhousing can I change the selector housing over with the ashcroft adapter and it will work?
yes disco and defender r380 on differ with selector shaft yoke and top,ashcrofts adapter and def top swaps a disco to def spec

I always assumed lt77 and r380 were both longer in the disco version.
Question....
I have a Defender spec LT77 in me 110, I fitted a disco 200tdi to it without moving the box from its factory position.
Would a 380 from a disco fit without modding anything apart from the shift adapter from Ashcroft?
