After fiddling around most of the day trying to level up a 300tdi in a swb series 3 would a good guide be about level with the crankshaft pulley/front cross member. One of the images was taken at an angle but barring the odd mm the top of the pulley is level with the front cross member. The series transfer case is held by the existing LR brackets.

Is it mated to the series 3 gearbox and bellhousing
If the block is similar to the 200tdi then the crank bolt is pretty close to centre oh hole in font crossmember
What engine mountings have you used

Not welded in yet but Steve Parker brackets with the original 300tdi rubber mounts - R380 gearbox adapted to the series transfer case.

Can you use a spirit level? I think I'm right in thinking if the vehilce is level the engine should be because the output shaft is parrallel to the chassis rail.

Yes, that's what I've checked - spirit level on the chassis then on the rocker cover but was waiting for someone to say ah or but !!
If this is correct then I'll go with the top of the front pulley level with the top of the front cross member.

The crank centreline shouild line up with the clutch and box at the rear and the hole for the starting handle at the front. The gearbox mounts should fix the rear hight as its a series box..
