300tdi Flasher Unit Confusion?!

Hi All,

Ive done a quick search but not come up with any answers.

The indicators on my '94 300tdi Discovery have given up. There is no audible 'click' from the fuse panel when they are on. (Hazards are the same).

So i am assuming the flasher unit (relay) is knackered. Ive looked for replacements, but they all seem to be of a different spec.

Here is the relay I have:

Now all the one's I have found have different wattages etc on the front. Will this be an issue, or does it have to be exactly the same?

Yes it will be an expensive purchase if just based on assumptions and then to find its not required. Test don't guess.:D
 
Indicators being quite important and all, I can't for the life of me think why you'd grumble at that price?

Buy it, fit it and be happy it'll last another 21yrs.

Most likely longer than you'll own it. :rolleyes:
 
But!!!! My indicators stopped working a few months ago,spent about 3quid on a relay from the passenger foot well and all was back to normal.

Depends Terry, which relay did you replace?

On my 200 Tdi I needed a new relay and it happens that the one that came off isn't even a listed LR part, and no matter what I have tried so far seems to yield any type of result, std was a 3pin relay without tow hook, with tow hook was a 4 but none of them fit or work the indicators as they should, I have one of my hundreds of spare relays in at the moment that works the indicators but the dash lamp does not illuminate nor does the single flash of the trailer coupling lamp!

Time will tell, eventually.
 
I was always under the understanding that relays were usually a few quid ... a fiver at the most.

In all honesty, until payday finding £30 for a relay isnt an option, hence trying to find a cheaper alternative for now.



Nothing happens when the indicators or hazard button is pushed. Nothing at all. No lights on the dash, no clicking from the relay below, bulbs do nothing.

What exactly can I test to see if it is the relay thats knackered?

And where in the passenger footwell is this other relay?
 
The indicator is just any relay with make break contact inside but i've never known one to totally fail but no doubt they can.
Have you checked the ignition supply to fuse 1 and the fuse itself in the interior fuse box, also fuse 4 in the engine bay, this one is also used for the horn so does that still work? then there's the plug connection for both the indicator and hazard switch.

Y not try your local auto shop to see if there's a 'pattern part' indicator relay available.

Right, both of those fuses were blown.

Swapped them out and I've now got a horn! ... but still no hazard or indicators.

Pulled the relay out and brought it into work. Opened it up and the switching arm was stuck down. Free'd it up and blown it out now, will pop down and test it shortly. Fingers crossed.

As far as i know its to do with the tow bar wiring.

If the truck came with tow bar wiring from factory it had a 4 pin (Disco 1), if it came without it only had a 3 pin. Unless, of course, some smart feller fitted tow bar electrics with LR parts.
 
Update!

So I popped the relay back in, checked all the fuses. All good.

Ignition on, indicate left, 1 trailer flash then signal flashes. Perfect.

Indicate right, relay goes f*%king mad, buzzes and pops both fuses. Sh!!t.


So now I'm out of fuses, but i know the relay is fine and theres a short/blown bulb.

Regarding the blown bulb, i always assumed that if a bulb was blown, the resistance changes causing the relay to trigger alot quicker. Making the remaining light flasher faster than usual? Well, my relay clicked so fast it sounded like a buzz?

Ill take a multimeter, some contact cleaned and a few tools down on lunch and have a look at the bulbs and holders.
