Had our Defender serviced by a Land Rover specialist Xmas eve.
I noticed when I dipped the oil before using it Saturday that the engine oil is more than an inch above the full mark on dipstick!!!!
Checked when Hot and the same.
Any reason why they might have done this? It wasn't using or burning an appreciable amount of oil pre service.

Maybe the "specialist" automatically topped up the oil without checking the existing level. What about all the other levels?

They did filter and oil change so should have checked level afterwards ? My only concern is whether any damage can be done running with too much oil?

A search on here should tell you. However, it seems too much of a coincidence. It was fine before the service and overfilled just after?!

Can't you undo the sump plug and drain some of the oil out? That would be the easiest solution I would have thought.

Use an oil extractor pump to get the level correct. You can use a large medical syringe attached to windscreen washer pipe, fed down dipstick tube and gently draw it into syringe. Fiddly but works. Repeat as many times as needed to correct level.

Thanks for responses. Have been out and dropped nearly 2 Lt via sump plug!

that oil over the fill level won't do a damn thing wrong to the motor. Just keep a eye on it so the level dosen't go any high, a indicator you got diesel going into the crank case

yes it will,it can cause excessive crankcase pressure and blow the crankshaft seals.do you know anything at all.ffs.

You should of said it might, not it will, wrong info.....1'' over is less than a liter more like 1/2 a liter
there is not enough there to do that, and if his crank case vent is working properly not a issue

read the thread,he said two litres came out of it.now feck off and bother someone else.you interfear on EVERY thread.:rolleyes:

Thor, try reply 6......and yes over filling will blow the seals, some of the beloved RLC type I have to endure do it all the time and end up fecking the lumps in their old Drops trucks.........smbaker if the level is staying high I'd look at the possibility of diesel entering your oil system...

A female friend of mine had another mate help her change the oil in her motorbike.

When she started it up the next day to go out for a run, it literally sprayed oil out of the breathers all over the drive. Luckily she isn't daft and put it straight back in the garage. I nipped round, later and managed to drain 2 litres out of it before the oil level dropped down to the sight glass. We had to clean the air box all out as it was full of oil etc.

The oil capacity on the side of the engine said 1.2l !! Luckily it seemed ok afterwards.

Also the competent mechanics at my old work overfilled my work van on an oil change by almost an inch on the dipstick, took it straight back and they syphoned out over a litre.

It's not as rare as you think.

I always fill mine up to 1/2 way on the dipstick marks and run it then top up the extra later usually a filter fill drops it down to just above min.
