Afternoon all,

back for more technical advice :/

currently running a 300tdi disco 1 engine in my 110.
my friend was out in it yesterday and after about 50 miles on the motorway it split a heating matrix hose and dumped its coolant then cut out.

he repaired the hose, let it cool and refilled the system and got it back to me with a fairly high temperature but not quite in the red.

I've just taken it out for a run to have a look at whats going on and I'm finding the temperature is climbing fairly rapidly and boiling into the expansion tank, i can't however find any leaks on the system.

I changed the water pump about 400 miles ago as the bearing went, i wouldn't like to rule that out though. if theres anything I've learned in the past its that a brand new landcover part can definitely be faulty!

where do i go from here? cheers

how do i check the stat?

rad isn't hot. all the hoses feel pressurised bar the 2 for the heating matrix which are empty but really hot! also heating has stopped working since this has happened.

cheers

If your so called mate ran your engine with little / no coolant are you sure he aint cooked your cylinder head gasket, if your getting a bit of white smoke / steam or condensate be prepared to spend a few quid. Alloy heads are great as long as they stay cool too hot and they warp....not good!! If your engine stopped that indicates to me it could of seized slightly as it got too hot and closed up its tolerances.

GET YOURSELF ANOTHER FRIEND....... or make him pay

always check that the internal (cab) heater gets hot after changing coolant

its inline with the head, so, if youre not getting hot air in the cab, youre likley not getting cooling on the head.

Only if the OPs 110 Is fitted with an 'air blending' heater box, something that didn't arrive on the disco till 1995.:)

Sent from my iPad Air on a train.
90/110/130 300tdi heater matrix are full flow, setting it to hot will not bring it 'into circuit' .
I've no idea about disco heaters or that 1995 is special in disco land.
Sent from me fone outside the co.op

unfortunately he's not very technically minded so thats where the initial issue lies.. however its done now so I'm ready to move on with my life

when I run it unto temperature the only place I'm getting white smoke/steam is out of the expansion tank cap, if i ease it off to let the pressure out it starts bubbling like all hell is breaking loose. apart from that no leaks or smoke anywhere else.

Perhaps I'm not understanding what u mean by full flow?
But with air blending heater the matrix could be hot all the time, u could call that "full flow" as there's no means available to stop flow of coolent what ever its temperature flowing through to the heater matrix.
Therefore no need to select hot on the heater controls.

That's it, you've got it.
Sounds like the HG has gone ( getting back to the OP problem)

hopefully it hasn't gone, but its not the end of the world if it has... I've just found a decent guide on filling it up properly so il give that a go tomorrow and see whats happening. like I've said though theres no leaks anywhere or anything drastic going on.

STOP RUNNING IT, ITS NOT THE HEATER THINK LOGICALLY!! Your mate has definitely cooked your head no question dont let anyone tell you otherwise. No it is not the heater thats rubbish. It is not bubbling because its boiling its because gasses from the cylinders are pressurising the water system via a warped head / blown gasket and emminating up the pipe to there only escape...the header tank. I have been a Chief Marine Engineer or 30 years and worked on every single diesel engine out there and I strongly strongly advise you get it checked by a decent mechanic ASAP as if you carry on you will warp the head beyond repair. Then its a huge job and your not getting much change out of £1500+ possibly more if you need a new head. Hope he is a good friend and offers to pay!

Check the oil dipstick any slight white gloop etc and water is also in the oil. In time that will damage the bottom end too

What the guy above said ! , I know it's comforting to live in hope but, the fact is THE HEAD GASKET WILL BE BLOWN, not a theory but a fact based on real life experiences and history.
