I did a search and found several threads on the subject of 300tdi overheating but the fun I am having with my 300tdi is I think it is overheating just a little bit. ;)
I had a look last night in the expansion tank and at least the water is moving there so doesn't look like a water pump problem, but the coolant is very brown rusty coloured (is this normal?)

I am thinking that there may be sludge in the bottom of the radiator and that this could be contributing to my overheating.

Does anyone have a good article on how to flush the cooling system and radiator and what is the best way to fill it back up and what is the best coolant to use?

you will need a new one biggest cause ive found for overheating on 300s is rad youcan tell by feeling the rad core when hot it should be hot all over if noy its not cooling efficentlt and will get worse

Ok thanks mate - I found a second hand one locally for €100 comes with intercooler too, sounds like good value. Any idea on what is best coolant? Any cheap one or maybe some preferred one?

there £100 new ,check you new rad is hot all over after fitting fairly quickly as theres no saying its right however good it looks, ive never found a problem with std coolant or oat ,just rads

Good way to clean them is drain the system fill up with plain water, add some cloths washing powder and take it for a drive, ive also used ctfr good stuff.
You might have to this a couple of times to get it properly clean.

drain as above, but use a liter of cider vinegar its a mild acid and will clean your radiator core and heater core also when you drive have the heater on and on high to circulate collaint

On my old series 2 i went into robert dyas and got some large appliance cleaner meant for washing machines etc, stuck this in the rad with plain water the amount of crap it got out was amazing.
Annoying thing was i had to flush the system at least 5 times over a weeks period before the water ran clear.
