Hi all, I have a Disco 300 tdi with a strong engine, clutch and box etc. Is there any links on converting a 1986 90? is it possible to put the lot in with power steering too?

Thanks in advance

loads, have a search :D

yup you can stick it all in inc the steering box (as they are the same in the defender).

your 86 probably has a 3 bolt and can be close to the engine, so best to swap it. also i think the threads mightn't match/pipes too short/ or some other reason if you keep the old box.

Thanks, there is no way I'd be able to do this myself. Just reading it is overwhelming

What sort of price would this cost to get done?

dunno, it's not hard to do though. as long as you are a bit of a diyer, you can do it :)

that was the first one i'd ever done :)

I've never really done any mechanical work though, talk about jumping in at the deep end. I usually would but can see me making a right old mess.

The 300tdi engine runs so smooth and quiet so it would be great to put it in

well, you've either got the grand or so or you don't ;)

once decided, there's some options you need to decide. like the disco gearbox will come up a bit futher back than the defender, so the middle seat needs fettling, or you stick a defender one in or mod the disco one.. it's in that thread a posted.

if your engine is ok atm, there's no rush, have a think :)

You can get an adapter for the disco R380 that puts the gear lever in the right place. You are also going to need an R380 floor tunnel and floor plates

f you are methodical its an easy swap , as it is just unbolt one component and bolt in the other . Apart from engine mounts its all nuts an bolts . Even the discovery rad and intercooler can be modded to fit . If I was closer I would be able to guide you thru , might be able to find someone on here willing to do the same . You will need to change the seatbase tunnel and bulkhead diaphragm . IIRC Ashcroft do a conversion for R380 disco to defender for the gear change . You will also need to either mod the disco transmission cross member (hacksaw job) or get a defender one . Rear prop , possibly change the front of rear diff depending on age of discovery If moving disc rear axle over. brake balance valve . The pipes (oil, rad and and intercooler ) should all transfer across. Defender exhaust. and a bit of merging of the wiring , and thats about it ! HTSH

Thanks all, I'll see if somebody local fancies the job and then decide. The current engine is running really well but it's a non turbo
