Ok, so i took the plunge and started in on my first cambelt change, made a locking tool for the pulley bolt, got all the bits i thought, went in expecting a day of sheared bolts, oil leaks and other woes as seems to be normal when reparing a landy.

Bonnet up, i wasn't going to drain the coolant but it turns out you can't get the fan cowling off with the top pipe in place:(, viscous coupling came off with a gentle tap on the spanner, fan belts came off easy, big pulley bolt came undone with a bit of a grunt on the 30" breaker bar, the pulley slid off easy:), half the front cover bolts were loose:confused:, cover off, timing pins in, belt off, tensioner off, crank gear slid off easy:), oil seals out and replaced, by now i thought i would be done for lunch time but oh no.

I went to fit the new crank sprocket and noticed there was an o-ring in the back of the old one, none in the kit, local shops had nothing, main dealers had nothing:mad: so that was it, end of work until monday night i guess, all because of a bloody 50p o-ring:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

On the bright side, there were no oil leaks, the old belt was ok, the timing was not perfect, and i fitted a new thermostat:eek:. The timing case was full of caked on mud so i'm guessing some **** had been in water without fitting the plugs:rolleyes:, i cleaned it all out. The pulley shows signs of grooving where the seal runs, its not too bad so i'll clean it up and re-use, its not too critical anyway.

Hopefully i'll get her back together on monday if its not ****ing down i guess.

So despite checking and re-checking, i still missed a part out:rolleyes:

Yeah, thats the ****er, i was really expecting a tough job to go tits-up as usual, with rounded bolts, sheared studs and the like but to be beaten with a bloody o-ring really ****ed me off, there are no good motor factors locally and the landy store shuts at 12 on saturdays and is 40 mins drive each way but only 10 mins from where i work.

Once the pulley was off i modified my lock tool to fit better too, i was really pleased when this just slid off with a gentle tug.

There is some slack in the fan support bearing, is this fixable or another big job???

Dave

I bet you felt really ****ed off after the rest of the job went so well.

I learnt some time ago that simple things like O rings are often needed, from jobs on part of my guns down to a hose pipe connector, so I bought a big plastic box of all sizes from about 4mm up to 50mm at the local market for a fiver and there are hundreds in that box and I can almost be sure of always finding one to suit the job.

My cam belt is due a change as it has done 30k on the existing one and I want to play safe and get it done soon, but I may chicken out and pay to have mine done as I just know mine wont be as simple

****ed off? I'm still swearing at it and kicking the cat!

Its fecking bright sunny and warm out now, perfect for tinkering, all i've done is give the rear end windows another dose of Capt. Tolley's and a bit of silicone to try and stem the flood of rain that is collecting on the rear load cover:(:(:(

The carpets will have to come out as the sponge crap is wet, that's another job, is it hard to get the carpets out???

I got the ladders out to seal the alpines up and found why the rear sunroof don't work - lashings of silicone, never mind it'll save me from doing it.

I was toying with reusing the old crank o-ring but judgement got the better of me and i refused, it'll likely **** oil over me new cambelt and wreck it so best do it right.

Job done :)

Took 1-1/2 hours to get her back together, carefully bled the cooling system with the header tank lifted up high, squeezed the pipes and didnt rush it.

One crank and she was away again :) Let her warm up, heater pipes all hot, rad pipes hot, new 'stat opened when it should, i think the jobs a good 'un.

I'm most pleased as its my first cam belt and it all went (almost) to plan.

Thats another job done, thanks for all the help again.

Dave

(now for the rusty floor, i've got the panel, so thats a start)

Sorry, i should have given more info...

Yes, i had to take the top hose off, cowling and covered the rad with some thick card. I drained down by removing the hose from the header tank that goes to the bottom rad pipe so i didn't have to take the bottom hose off. You cant get the cowling off unless you take the top hose off, but the radiator being there gave no probs at all.

I used the wife's digital compact camera with close-up to get a good view of the timing marks which worked really well.

I checked the timing three times, turning two revolutions between each, very slight adjustments to the pump timing made and on the last one it all timed perfectly. She seems a bit perkier to drive too which is good.

Great stuff-I replaced the rad on mine as part of a full overhaul :D
HOWEVER when all was back together I had forgotten to put the cowling back on:doh:
No prob though-only top pipe off again :D:D

It is a 2" diameter dental type mirror-telescopic with a swivel head-think I got it from Aldi-brilliant (helped with the clutch as well, for inside bell housing viewing)

As a matter of interest chaps I got a timing kit + oil seals based on the VIN No. Have read some were modified but I wont know until the timing cover is off I suppose

I think the moded one has shoulders on the drive pulley and none on the tensioner-I think :D
