Hello All,
I have recently had a cambelt snap and after refitting everything I am having a popping noise though the snorkel. I have replaced the head complete with valves etc, had 2 damaged pushrod sliders all replaced but now I am down on power and I think its fuel related, could the cam be a tooth out causing this noise and performance issue?

I had an exhaust tappet adjuster come so loose the valve was shut all the time and was exhausting through the inlet making a right clatter
Maybe try and record sound to work out frequency of pops compared to rpm

I have adjusted and re-adjusted the valves I dont know how many times and watched them carefully whilst its running and they all seem good.

some symptoms here might help pinpoint

Have you tried disconnecting rubber hose at the manifold , I run the oil bath filter on mine and get a booming type noise which I associated with the particular air filter , dare say if I put a mesh filter on would sound com0etly different , engine sounds ok to me but could post on the defender forum where more owners would see it

Yes, its definately a valving issue which is why i wondered if the cam might be a tooth out or something

Doubt it. My 2.5 TD Ninety had the standard mesh and cyclonic filter elements, and the intake noise was still quite loud.
I think it is the metal can that amplifies the noise, not the element.

The one thing you would notice would be the cost, the plastic and mesh elements cost upwards of a tenner.

If the cam is out would this affect the lift pump as well becasue I think its under fuelling too and the IP advanced as far as I can without check engine light

Doubt it. A mechanical lift pump delivers far more fuel than the Injection pump can use, and it doesn't make any difference when the lever goes up and down, so long as it does.
Some of those have electric lift pump, but I can't see it would make any difference to that either.

I would think you are close to the mark with having the cam pulley or the Injection pump a tooth out, but not much experience of 300 Tdi, so don't really know.

I dont get any smoke which is why i think I am under fueling. Prior to the cambelt snapping it was usually over fuel smoke (grey/black) under heavy acceleration but not clouds.

You will get a puff of black smoke under hard acceleration with pretty much all old diesels, and even not so old ones.
I would not consider it to be a problem, or do anything about it.

You best bet would be to set it to TDC number one, and try and put the pins in again, see what is going on.

The problem I have is the lack of power, with it being an Auto, I am having to put more throttle in causing the gearbox to constantly kickdown, even down to 1st as 15-20mph and cant get above 60mph on the motorway unless foot to the floor.

I will do that and keep digging, thanks.
