thought the grinding kinda noise was coming from the transmission somewhere at first but it appears to be the bottom pulley.

is this going to be something related to the crank or does it just need a good greasing? (engine oil was done a few weeks back and level is fine.)

Sorry you've lost me there:confused:

hi first thing is the pulley loose ,has the nut come loose and the pulley is chattering on the woodrough key ide take the pully off and inspect where the woodrough key fits or slides on the pulley it probably has eaten some of the groove away on the pulley .

Well I think that if that was the case he would'nt be able to hear any grinding noise cos all his engine timing would be going tit's up with the play on the crank shaft pulley and running like a bag of ****e.

not nessasary the timming gear is behind the bottom pulleyand has its own woodrough key i work on mod wolf engines for the ta and change cambelts quite regually ive seen the damage done by a bottom pully comming loose it scaps the pully sometimes the crank goes with it just depends on how long its been loose the cam timming shoud not alter if the pulleys still attatched or be it loose.

Fair comment Morris!

I had a crank pulley go on it's woodrough key on a VW Passat, ran as rough as a barstood as if it had jumped a tooth on the cam belt-dunt take much!!!

Maybe it just needs a greasing after all?:D

like i said check that the pulley is tight otherwise the constant stopping and starting wears a groove in the bottom pulley this will only happen if it has come loose i locktight them at work i carnt tell you where i do work or the mps might want a word with me anyway i hope that this has been of some use to you if its ok then without lisening to it the noise that is could be an easy fix or a major.

You don't need loctite on the bolt, just use the locking tool and do the thing up to the correct torque, 80Nm + 90deg. Unfortunately most DIY'ers can get the bolt off using the starter motor, but can't do it up properly. We have rescued a crank or two by welding and regrinding the key slots. I don't think we guarantee the job though.

And just because you had your cambelt changed by a stealer it doesn't mean they have done it properly either....
