Hi, all you land roverers. Those that were involved in the thread ''200 or 300TDI'' will know about my dilemma.
I finally decided a 300tdi was worth it. I found one, 300tdi split from a discovery. That's all i want for now, because i want to rebuild the engine. I'm gonna get radiator, r380 g/box and other necessary stuff when my dad scraps his disco. As the title says, this engine has a blown head gasket. Could you guys list ALL possible causes? Even the stupid ones are welcome!

age (gaskets will only last for so many heat cycles,)and poor cooling system often rad not cooling all over the core surface ,can be felt once engines up to temp

Dont forget the all important P gasket, most people do and the coolant leak is so slow the leaking coolant evaporates on the hot block so nobody notice's the leak until it's to late.

I would not refit a TDI head without taking it for a skim first, no matter how light the skim is. So far, each TDI head gasket I replaced without having the head skimmed failed very shortly after. I know that there are various schools of thought and probably James Martin will not agree with me but this is just my personal experience.

Mine wasn't skimmed and it has been fine for getting on for 2 years. In my eyes don't skim unless you really have to as its one step closer to needing a new head. Plus mine is on the biggest thickness head gasket already...

Thanks for all the replies, guys! Upon rebuilding the engine, ALL gaskets were gonna be replaced, block painted up, manifold painted up, everything, really. I will make sure the rest of the engine is good before, fingers crossed, i get to start it for the first time again!
