my disco been sat a while (driving ban) and i i took it for a blast (in reverse) down my mums driveway, and when it hit boost(low range) black smoke pured out of it :(

i'm thinking a next is now in the airbox??

it has a snorkle so doubt it, but i'll check tomorrow

anyother things to look at?

Check turbo hoses first for splits. They can also delaminate on the inside causing intermitant black smoke and power loss. Check the elbow pipe to turbo.

if i'd gone forward i would be in a tree!!!

don't f**king jump to the conclusion that i drove like a prat, i was towing a trailer, which weighed in at over 2.2 tones, i passed my test after 97 so thats 3 points then because i'd broken my licence rules, (gross weighted trailer no more than 750KG) i voided my insurance six points!! i already had three from a mini that had lost a wheel arch so thats the magic 12 :( six month ban and knobs thinking i drive like a ****

in low range a blast in reverse was below 10mph!!!!!!

lol, i passed my test in 2006... and i towed a twin axle flat bed, with a series II on top of it for 35 miles... OOPS!

just to be "on topic"... my 300tdi seems to be puffing out black smoke occasionally, normally on immediate startup then nothing until engine is under load (going uphill).
gonna try some injector cleaner through the system and a full service even though the las service was about 50 miles ago (but 18 months ago too...) (landys been off the road for ages)

Black smoke is a sign of over-fuelling. That can be too much fuel or too little air .. both sides of the equation need checking, but most regularly it's de-laminating turbo hoses ... ;)

well i dont know whether the previous owner has fiddled with the fuel pump or not, im gonna try it with a hi-flow air filter (like a K&N) to see whether that stops it, failing that im gonna try turning the diaphragm down 90 degrees n see what that does. BUT firstly... like you said... im gonna check the turbo hoses. saying that i cant actually hear my turbo... ill have to check it with a boost gauge...
