Probably random question, but is it possible for a water pump to fail and there not be any play in the pulley?

Visually checked when belt on, on play, physically checked when stopped with belt on and off, no play.

If it leaks or doesn't pump water then it's failed:)

I have a leak from around the water pump sort of area lol. No sign of damaged hoses hence why asked if pump could fail with no signs of play. I have a spare in the box of bits so will swap it out.
I know its over 5 years old so at least its one less thing to fail in the snow lol.

Mine failed, it was a plastic cheepo one that had been fit by th privouse owner, fitted a new metal one and problem solved

I don't think so. The leak is accompanied by a dry metal sounding rumble that started when my tensioner went.

If it's p gasket, you'll see evidence of water running down block behind where pump bolts through, if you look from passenger side. I'd change the pump, they're cheap enough, and it's a doddle, as long as bolts not rusted solid......

Have been informed they are mostly made out of a mixture of cheeses.
I keep a box of cheap spares that i don't want to keep me off the road, water pump, belts, UJ etc, so i Will swap and order a new one.

Well, done the waterpump, turned out the pump was reasonable, but the P gasket had started to fail. As the rubber seal around the bearing was also beginning to perish i decided to pop the new pump in anyway.

Funnily enough, I had a bolt issue. Not the ones around the pump, no they cracked off very easily. For some reason I think someone must have welded one of the bolts holding the PAS pulley on. Ended up cracking the housing on the pump where the bolt screws into.
Bit of swearing, chemical metal and it's back together. Give it overnight and pop the belt back on.
