My 300 Tdi 90 has a few tweeks, K&N air filter big intercooler and stainless exhaust with no back box. I'm also running on 265/75/16's I'm getting about 225 to 250 miles out of a tank of fuel, depending on if I've been up and down the motorway etc? Is this about right? Can some people let me know what they are getting?

Dunno about your fuel consumption, but don't leave the country with that so-called air 'filter' fitted. You get a million mile warranty on the filter and it will F**k up your engine if there is any dust about.

Your signature reminds me of cleaning instructions for K&N filters:
1) remove filter
2) place on concrete or brick paving
3) pour petrol on it
4) light with match
5) go and buy proper paper filter
6) fit it
 
The figure of 225-250 miles per tank is pretty meaningless as we don't know how much fuel is left when you fill up or do you mean that is on a completely empty/dry tank? Even then we need to know exactly how much you are putting in it. I tend to fill up at around 250 miles and am putting in little over 8-gallons but much better to work out the MPG accurately.
Just fill the tank to the same point each time you fill up (i.e. the gauze in the filler neck) and then make a note of the amount of fuel you put in each time, the first time you do it you will get a figure but if you do it every time you can see how the MPG varies (or not) across different trips, driving styles etc. I do this mentally at the pump every time I fill up (remember 4.54L=1gal, 9L=2gal) but if I want a really accurate figure or I think it has changed significantly I check it with my calculator when I get home. As a rule I get 28MPG when driven hard or 32MPG when I take a bit more care, this is on a completely standard 300TDi 90 with Disco transfer-box and 265/75x16 BFG AT's and calculated on all fuel used over the past 2-years or so. Also the speedo has been checked against a GPS and the (small) difference taken into account when comparing speeds/distances.
 
I gets almost exactly 5 miles to the litre in a td, very slightly less on a motorway(or similar as we ain't got none down ere!), but no variation dependant on mix of derv/svo (which varies between 30-50% oil)
 
I get about 300 miles to 42 litres of fuel, you do the math.

My brother fitted a K&N filter to his 309 GTi once and it drank fuel but i think it might have been the speacial induction type.

Do what Litch says, brim the tank and zero the trip, use it until it gets down to below 1/4 and and then brim it again and calculate how many miles you have done compared with how much fuel you managed to put back in.

I dont tend to hang around when driving and will regularly out accelerate boy racers, my truck will do 400 miles on a tank.........just under 40mpg!!!
 
I know, it suprises me sometimes.
Even on a motorway doing 80-85 i will get 36mpg
I have had the calculations for the motorway checked and they are right
I'm just pleased mine is as good as it is

what size tyres are you running? It sounds like yer speedo is out. I put a set of 235/70/16's on my v8 110 a couple of years back and according to the speedo I was getting 25 mpg. It was completely wrong but I had me mates confused for a bit.;) :D

Unless you brimmed it with diesel and then used it until it ran out your measurements will not be accurate pal
 
Well, my tank is just over 54 litres, i used most of it then refilled it to the brim whick took 45 litres or 10 gallons in old money. it covered 400miles before i brimed it with 45 litres therefore..........400/10 =40mpg!!!
