Mine does exactly the same thing. I posted about it in this thread:

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/disco-fuel-system-90981.html#post921415

I have changed my fuel filter, oil, oil filter, removed the egr valve and put injector cleaner in the fuel tank. All of these have made improvements to how the car runs but not solved the problem completely.

Other people on here have suggested I should check the following things:

Sedimenter - dissassemble and clean
Fuel sender - check connection to fuel pipes for cracks - apparently a common fault which allows air into the fuel.
Fuel Pump - apparently it is possible for the car to run with a faulty/broken fuel pump as the injector pump has enough power to draw fuel all the way from the tank on its own.

I have yet to check these things and will post back if I manage to solve the problem on mine.

Thinking out loud I'm wondering if dirty/knackered injectors are part of the problem. My engine has done 140,000 miles and I would put money on it that the injectors have never been serviced during that time.

ok thanks for that mines done 110000k and changed all my filters and was thinking about putting some injector cleaner through, where and what is the sedimenter ?

Sedimenter is effectively a course fuel filter - separates water from the fuel as well as any massive lumps of crud that might be found in the bottom of the fuel tank. it can be found on the drivers side under the car, a little behind the back wheel. Looks a bit like a fuel filter. When you take it appart you will need to replace the gaskets which are about 60p each and two of them. Also buy a replacement drain tap for £1 or so as the originals tend to jam up and snap.

no - yu remove the can from its housing and clean out all the grit and sand and other crap that it collects, wipe it all clean, wash it in petrol/diesel if you wish, but it is unneccessary.

Out of interest does anyone know why the sedimenter bowl is made from two sections ? I can see no logical reason for it, looks like it would work just as well as a single piece.

the gaskets for that can you just get them from your local auto factors or will they have to come from landrover?

I got the two gaskets and replacement drain tap for about £2.50 from my local landrover place - brookwells. I dont think theyre a landrover dealer as such but they do sell all things landrover. Think they also sell by post/online so if you have nowhere local you could give them a call.

btw, checked my fuel pump today and discovered it is ****ed. I'm thinking now that it has possibly never worked since before I owned the car. Going to order a new one tomorrow, hopefully I will see a big improvement in performance and have no more surging.
