Hi everyone.

I have a quick question regarding an offer I have been given. A friend has a Disco and has offered me the engine gearbox and transfer box for my 1988 110. It's a 300 tdi complete with everything except the radiator. The clutch is knackered but I would have replaced it anyway. He said i could have the lot for £150. As my 110 still has the original 19j do you Defender scholers think it's a good buy?

Thanks for any advice.

Personally I'd be ripping his arm off, I did my conversion from a 19j to a 300tdi last year and I can't believe the difference, you'll need to change the engine mounts and rad mounts though, probably easier if you mate it up to your gearbox

Thanks for the swift reply Marmaduke.
I think I'll have it then. My 19j only has 73000 on it as its an old welsh fire engine, but i gather it's not the best engine for a Defender.

Mine will accelerate in 5th up hills where I used to decelerate going up in 4th, it's less smoky, starts without glowpulgs most mornings as if it were a petrol and just makes my old tratter feel easier to drive

If you punch him a few times, you'll be getting away with day light robbery with violence. :D
Presumably, you know it's not knackered.

I changed my 19J to a 200 two years ago, and the difference is unbelievable. Admittedly the 19J had 130,000 miles under it's belt and the 200 was completely rebuilt, but even so the improved acceleraton, torque and cruising are all in another league. At the same time I fitted a disco transfer box, upping the gearing, and the performance was still noticibly better.Always starts on first compression as well:D
If you want to have a look I'm near Sudbury, not very far away.

Go for it,as your's is still working you can take your time to prepare 300[cam belt, rear crankseal[only use an original one] clutch] before putting it in. Lots of info on this site about doing the job.

Thanks for the links and replies.
I've paid him now and he's assured me its all sound, save for the clutch, I will have to source a rad but no hurry.
I may take you up on that offer flatlander, I'm free most weekends so prehaps we could arrange something.

And I'll take your advice tottot, about replacing the cam belt and crankseal, thanks .

My transfer box leaks a bit and I think the diff is damaged so may use the disco one, I assume it's the same apart from the gearing.

The whole drive train will drop straight in , just need to sort the engine mounts on chassis, if you put in using gearbox cross member as datum the pipes will all be standard onto 300tdi rad and intercooler. The discovery gearbox gear selector will be in wrong place for defender. IIRC the seatbase & tunnel will be need mod to clear r380 gearbox.

Go for it,!!! Almost twice the power and almost half the fuel consumption! If you don't have power steering try and get that well.

It has power steering and I like the idea of the r380. I'm ok with the mechanical stuff, a bit wary of the electrics though, when I look under the bonnet it reminds me of the seventies vehicles I used to work on. Do you consider an r380 worth the extra effort?

you'll need some bits n bobs as well. either defender r380 or convert that one. seatbox mod, half moon, tunnel and floor pans. the disco rad and intercooler will fit.

need rear defender 300 prop

might want the later handbrake setup as well

Thanks for the help guys.
I will start getting the bits together for the swap and post progress as and when it happens.
