I'm not sure if this is me being a plum or I've missed something. I've just fitted a brand spanking new complete head Inc. genuine 3 hole head gasket to my 300. The injectors and glow plugs are in the head, the ehx. and in. manifolds are off and it is torqued as per the RAVE manual. When turning it over to set the valve clearances it feels as if there is little or no compression which is not what I expected and has thrown me somewhat. I've just taken the rocker gear back off so all the valves are shut and it feels exactly the same. I'm reluctant to continue further and can't get my head round this. Is this the norm or have I missed something critical? Help me.

@robint, when i did mine like a complete numpty a fitted the gasket upside down, and has compression leaks, then she fired up and spat out it engine oil out. Head back off new gasket fitted correctly. No problems lol. My point was that i was leaking compression around the gasket. And yes i know i am a moron

I've given the head, injectors and glow plugs a good covering of soapy water to eliminate any external leaks and nothing. I can hear compression when turning it over by hand but there is very little resistance, that little I can turn it over easily with a ratchet on the alternator pulley. How come it's easier to get hold of you on here Rewmer than it is trying to phone you. I'm telling Poos !.

Check the valve clearances, if they're tight then the valves will never be fully closed, thus giving no compression.

old down bores 1 teaspoon per bore and drag up road with foot floored.

Other way easy start.

done loads of times on cooked engines

How hot did it get when the head went ?

It wasn't overheating at all. All I got was white smoke on start up when it was warm and it was using water so I knew something head related was up. I was using it daily up till a couple of weeks ago when I removed the head and it was running fine.

pull out the glow plugs and put some oil in the cylinders and try a compression test with a real tester not by feel ,try first without oil,if it increases with oil then its ring related

I'm going to try a compression test when I get time during the week. It seems weird that there is nothing across all the cylinders, yet it was fine before hand. It's not even as if it is down on one cylinder. It's twistin my melon man.

You have to remember you are getting a certain amount of mechanical advantage by using the alternator pulley to turn it over, somewhere in the region of 2.5 - 1 sontgat will make it feel easier than expected. The real test will be doing the compression test though.
