As with most things Land Rover you get one thing sorted and something else crops up, this time being a blown bulb / lamp in the head light.

Before I get a normal bog standard replacement is there any other type of bulb which I could use to improve the performance of the headlights short of carrying out the Disco 2 headlight install?

Make sure your reflectors are clean and the lenses are good, doing the headlight re-wire is a good idea, using good quality bulbs such as Osram Nightbreakers or Philips Extreme ...
You can swap the pre-facelift D2 headlights as a straight swap...

What Dippy said, 'specially the wiring. Basically use thicker wire with better connections.

How involved is the re wire, and how much better are the pre face lift td5 headlights? Short term I'll stick in some brighter bulbs but long term I'd like to make the headlights more effective than a couple of candles.

I've put the linky in for the headlight upgrade, but the pics are not there ... but BB is working on sorting that ...
so may have to rewire with relays on the fly ..
PDF for reference...
and the kits from the Aussie mob ... http://www.traxide.com.au/headlight-wiring-kits/
