Towing my caravan the other day up a long incline the auto box dropped into third and revs shot up to about 3000 Then I got a wiff of burning rubber.Looked under the bonnet and found black dust on alternator.Do I need a new belt and if I change it will it stop the problem?

change the belt, don't know if it will help with the box or not but the belt sounds goosed anyway. when was the last time you changed the fluid and filter in the box?

It's possible that it's just a knackered belt but I think it's more likely that a pulley has seized. Remove the belt and try turning the pulleys by hand. Usually (not always) the pulley with dust is the one at fault.

Thanks for that.I dont know when filter and fluid was last replaced[looked ok last time I looked]I,ll try a new belt for what it is .Would Slipping belt cause loss of power?

Ive had a look under the bonnet with engine running and all pulleys apear to be turning fine.It seems to do it when auto box drops a gear and revs spin up 3000+.I love Derbyshire but dont love pulling 1200 kg caravan up those hills.

Do what the man said - slip the belt off and check for a tight-to-turn pulley.

Otherwise your new belt may go up in smoke too.

Got new belt and fitted it but it started squeaking like a budgie so decided to do the "penny trick" Trouble is I cant get the nut on the tensioner to move.It is anti-clockwise to loosen? Tried a ring key with taps from rubber mallet but nut seems to be rounding off.Ive just sprayed some oil [very carefully] to see if it makes any diference.

STOP using any open-ended spanner or bi-hexagon ring spanner NOW!

GET A SINGLE HEX SOCKET of the correct size BEFORE you jigger the nut any worse!

Single hex socket is clearly a six-sided hole into the socket.

ANTI-CLOCKWISE to loosen it.

Ok I had another go at it today with my socket set,got a 15mm socket on and gave it massive force but I thought I was going to shear the drive on my socket ratchet.[its only a cheap one from Argos]It still didn,t budge so gave it some more wd40 and left it .Will try again tommorow

Sounds like it might be time for you to invest in a knuckle bar.;)

Its not a bolt its a nut.Didn't they teach you anything at night school:D

Never had to go to night-school so you'll need to tell me what those special remedial classes are like...

But at day school they certainly taught me where to place the apostrophe in the "it's" for "it is" and none in the possessive "its", and to have a space after a full stop, and a question mark at the end of an inquisitive sentence. Perhaps English isn't your first language.

Nut or bolt, I still hope he's turning it in the OFF direction.

Seems to me he's making a big deal of this "nut" anyway. Who lives near enough to go have a look? An expert peek might prevent a disaster.

Success ! Ive managed to move the nut and get the penny in. No more squeeks ! Not even a chirp! Thanks to Ratty and special thanks to uncle Charlesy for having such a good sense of humour .Bet your a bag of laughs.[you can check me spellings now] :D
