I've always liked Disco 1's since having a go in a new one in 1990, but at 24 I was hardly in a position to buy a new new. In 88 I very nearly went for a Suzuki SJ410 but ended  up buying a nearly new Fiesta XR2. Still got one today.

In 2007 I finally bought a Land rover, an 87 E 90 TD but sold it about a year later, wish I,d kept it now given the way defender prices will be going

A couple of years ago I got the Disco 1 itch but couldn't find one local enough with the right spec and minimal rot, not prepared to travel the country looking at Ebay "minters" I'd put the idea on the back burner.

Then in September I was driving past a local garage specialising in LR servicing and they had this on the forecourt

1995 M 5 seater 300 tdi with 144K on clock, service history with only 2 owners, 2nd since 2001. Seat covers since at least 2001 and rubber mats everywhere this disco is immaculate inside, although I have replaced the shiny smooth steering wheel with a better one. The Biarritz blue paintwork and bodywork are amazing for 19 years old. I've had to replace 2 tyres as one of them was a 1995 Goodyear GT4 - original spare??. It now has Goodyear Wrangler HP's all round. The driver seat base diaphragm then went ping so the seat got a new Exmoor trim base foam and diaphragm. Also bought new bumper corners as last owner painted the old ones - never heard of back to black then!! This Disco has got a proper throttle cable, no ABS, no sunroofs, no aircon. If it was any other "posh car" I'd have avoided it fo lack of goodies. Power steering/windows/locking I can live with ( and fix). And best of all no engine management light. Just the spec and condition I wanted.

I was going to use it for some light offroading etc but it's never been abused since day one judging by its condition so I may have to find another one rather rattier.....:D:D

It was £1800 which I know is top end for a D1 like this, but then again it doesn't need any "real" work and as I only intend to do a max of 4K a year and keep it for several years I reckon they'll be going up in value before long...been at scrapper level for too long now.

This disco works on 3 levels for me, a decent classic show vehicle with my local classic car club, a tow vehicle for whatever, and a decent rubbish tip delivery device, oh and 4, a nice drive in something you feel invincible in.

It still felt like a bargain though after paying over 4K for the 90 a few years ago, and that did need work...TD..nuff said there.

Nice, very nice. Good basic spec and no leaky sunroofs. Hope that you are intending to lose the side steps.

I quite like the side steps myself, especially when washing the roof. Since I don,t intend to use the car off road I can,t see them causing me any clearance problems. BUT I have had several people questioning their existence on the car.
