hey there, i just bought a landrover defender 110 its a 1999 tdi with 95k kms, the car was sitting for almost 2 years, i had to go and pick it up from a yard, put in a new battery and turned several times but nothing, bled air from system and it started..smokey and loud eventually but absolutely no smoke now and pulls very well indeed. i am yet to do a complete service on it. there was a clanky noise which has not gone yet, sounds like a loud chugging noise thats quite loud and remains at all rpms sounds like a torn belt hitting something or the like..the belts are ok i will change them but this noise must be detected, i am new with landies..esp this tdi.. the power is good right through even with the noise and the turbo kicks in fine. the noise seems to be the only issue now..could be air leak or something..it has a snorkel and its air conditioned too. have checked for air leak but all seems ok.. any ideas/suggestions?
the vehicle was owned and maintained by british high comm here in dhaka bangladesh and had been looked after well right through its life..
regards to all

big end bearings?

Does the noise change its speed/pitch with engine revs, and does it change when under load?

the noise decreases at high rpm. it certainly sounds like a foreign object noise outside the engine. like when u keep banging two metal plates together...the pulleys and tensioners are rusted from what i can see..
