Thick chuff of black smoke on start up and hard acceleration, improves when engine warms up but still same chuff of smoke on start up even when warm. The truck is thirsty compared to previous 300s but goes like a train.
Inter cooler bit grotty but seems clear, hoses in good nick and just light oily inside and secure. Have tried running with hoses and inter cooler removed but still same black smoke.
EGR blanked off, fuel and air filters are new, turbo some slight impeller play but not significantly oily inside.
Engine a bit loud again compared to last 300.
I am thinking injectors but all threads seem to suggest poor starting and performance when these are on the way out?
Any further suggestions ?

Sounds exactly the same as my 200tdi. + 1 for checking valve clearances. I did mine and it made quite a difference

Also someone may have tweaked the fuel pump itself if you're saying it goes like stink

Might have a modified boost pin too - might even be stuck - black smoke is usually over fueling - plenty of vids on youtube about such things. worth having a boost gauge on it to see if the waste gate has been faffed with...
