300 discovery central locking problem, please help

hi, just bought a very nice 1995 disco, very happy with it apart from the cenral locking, the remote works, light flashes when i press the button,put new batteries in anyway, the problem is that sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. all the doors open and lock when it works, but when it doesnt, nothing happens. i have to open with the key, which sets the alarm off and of course the immobiliser is armed, so i have to keep pressing the button until it does work, which eventually it does. what can the problem be? should i buy an aftermarket cenral locking kit and replace this one? anyone who knows, i would appreciate the advice.

Two things the fob can loose it tune over the years or is damaged inside due to being dropped of the acuators sticking or door locks are and need lubrication.
The locks have a small spring that can break one of the symptoms is the internal door pin rises but then drops back down a bit therefore the lock does not unlock.

exactly the same problem i am getting. Hope we can find a solution.

I'm pretty certain it's not a tuning issue, as I've reprogrammed mine regulaly and the fob is undamaged.

Pretty sure also, it's not the acuators or door locks on mine too.

Three things to look at.
The drivers door actuator, if this doesn't work non of the central locking works.
The alarm ECU can suffer from dry solder joints or corrosion due to getting wet.
Is the aerial plugged into the ecu?

Sorry, OP, not highjacking your thread, but we both appear to have the same issue...

For me, the Drivers Door Actuator works fine.
The aerial is plugged into the ECU fine
Maybe dry solder joints.

To check this, do i need to pull the ECU out and take it apart? If I do this, could/should I fit an aftermarket alarm instead?

I think its the main solenoid on the drivers door i had the same problem on my 95 disco and i replaced it that cured it hoe this helped hobbsy.

I'd remove the ecu and have a good look at the circuit board.
Might just be dry solder joints or it could be water damaged.
Probably easier and cheaper to replace it rather than buy an after-market unit.

hi, thanks but the remote is a fairly new replacement, and there are no problems with actuators or lock springs, having experienced those before.

Behind the glove box on a rack with a few relays.
Green box about the size of a ciggy packet mounted on its side with a coaxial aerial plug sticking in the lefthand side.
Numbered AMR... cant remember the number.

thanks to all for their help, after locating the ecu, i removed the aeriel wire, and plugged it back in, the central locking has worked every time since! shouldnt be surprised really, its a disco
