My daughter very kindly ran my 1998 v8 series 2 Disco out of water and destroyed the 3.9l petrol engine (very first Series 2 with more in common with the Series 1 I think) Second hand ones in Australia are hard to come by, so I am hoping someone on here might know if other Landrover models e.g. Range Rover might be interchangeable and if so what models?

Most rover V8 engines will fit. Not the JLR era models, but anything up to a P38a. You might get a better response in the V8 section. This is for the leaf spring Landrover engines, not the modern coil sprung things.

Though I think good SH units are getting scarce, partly due to the ending of production years ago & also their popularity when it comes to transplants.
It's even worse that someone else was using the car, you always think 'if only I had been driving' :(

My brother did the same to my Defender. Brought it to me at work half an hour before finishing time saying "i don't know what's wrong with your car. It's like it's overheating, but it isn't." When i refilled the COLD radiator a couple of minutes later using a measuring jug, it was one pint away from being bone dry! After going through the motions of a normal head gasket failure, it lasted about twelve miles before i noticed the back end was impersonating a steam engine. After getting the head stripped and pressure tested, which my mechanic's machinist said would be the source of the roblem, as he's at that time only ever seen one 200TDi block fail (year 2000) it came back fine. So i stripped the block out and gave it to him. He'd got the 200TDi block so hot, it had cracked a cylinder liner.
What annoyed me most was the fact that it had a 1 inch diameter red light on the dash which came on when the electric fan was running and my brother carried on driving while this came on ignoring it until the steam had stopped and misfiring started then thought it drive it to where i worked.

How bad is your engine? IS it scrap? Have you thought about getting the heads pressure tested and having it repaired?
