Hi all,

I am having a 2011, 110 rebuilt and am in the position no of having the engine bay empty, this is because we tried to fit a 2.2, LR 150 project engine and drive train in, but getting the 2.2 to fit is not that straight forward.
so I am now looking at brand new 2.4 or a 3.7V6 petrol conversion, both from M&D Engineering,
https://www.mdengineering.co.uk/3-7-ti-vct-v6-engine-conversion/

1,Have anyone had any experience with M&D and the 3.7 v6?
2,What do you think this would this do to the future long term valve?

Thanks
Rob

That is a really odd engine to be fitting to a Defender. Can you even get that engine in the UK? I don't recall Ford selling any cars with it here.

I assume they have done it because this engine was offered in the Mustang for a while and I suspect bolts straight up to the 6 speed gearbox in the Defender, as that is also used in the Mustang. I actually think it would probably be quite a nice engine in a Defender. Although I suspect it would feel somewhat racey. My only real reservation would be cost. Have you had any indication from M&D on what they want for their conversion kit? I suspect it'll be £££££ which might mean you could fit an even better engine for the same money.

The V6 is petrol, so expect it to be fairly juicy too.

Just out of curiosity, have you done engine swaps before? Or are you getting someone to do this. The 2.2 you mention is a transversely mounted engine, how far did you get in trying to use this?

Also curious, why are you needing a new engine? You say you are considering a new 2.4? What was wrong with the original? Or could you not look for a used one to fit? Are you looking for a major power upgrade?

The work is been done by a landrover defender garage. The engine was all mounted, it was the DPF was an issue in the, drivers footwell would need modification, and the main issue was the wiring. Would have needed a 2.2 loom or a lot of mess as there is a lot of wires.

The original engine had done 65k, not a lot I know, but it had a full rebuild galve chassis etc. It will be practically a new vehicle. I can get a 2.4 to match the original, and will be brand new to match the drive train. I had plumped for the 2.4 but the prospect of a v6 is tempting. And it’s Sort of now or never ( I know never say never )
I am waiting for the sting that would be the cost, should have it today.

the v6 comes from a ford cugar but could also be in the mustang not sure! It’s not power or speed ( I love the S3 cruising at slow speed) it’s just nice to have a v6 or v8. Mpg should be better than a v8 and not a lot behind the 2.4.
But cost will be the deciding factor,

It is a retorfit i heard of in LR owner international..

Odd engine i agree as the HP and Torque is all above 3000rpm :D

300 much more reliable TD5 just better
????

The guy has a Puma. All of the older engines are older and dynamically inferior. The Td5 is a nice motor, but the latter motors are more refined. Putting a Tdi in it would be laughable to point of insanity!

I have driven a puma then TD 5 the land rover engine was preferable to the transit

As I said, it is a lovely engine. But it is technologically inferior. I know you have a Td5 D2 and are a bit blinkered with it. Nothing wrong with this, but it doesn't alter any of the facts. :)

I own a Tdi powered vehicle. The engine is great, but putting one into a Puma Defender would make no sense at all.

I agree utter idiocy to fit an ancient lump, unless of course it had power..

Rv8 4.6 with a Torque max cam and big valve heads would get my vote.

So the scores on the doors for the V6 block, comes in a box with all the parts needed. £13k + £400 for the aircon, so that kinda answers the question, was told i would get about 15mpg for local driving so not a great return.

I also have a TD5 90 that has a sensible re-map and 3" twin pipes and a dummy cat and that drives and pulls really well, do like it a lot and it has a great note out of the pipes, but like you said it really doesn't make sense going backwards and this would have a affect on future saleability i think.
I plan to do a lot of traveling in this so really this I will stick with the New 2.4, and get it refined as much as sensibly possible.

Thanks for that guys

That is just silly amounts for the V6 swap. I know they need to make money and there was a small amount of R&D, but it is frankly a rip off for people with more money than braincells. And that is the market they are probably targeting.

You can get a crate Chevy LS V8 engine for about £6k. Which makes the V6 look very expensive, the company also state the kit is a pretty easy drop in.

Suspect if you wanted to do it, you could fab up a kit a lot cheaper.

In terms of other engines. There is a 3.2 five pot diesel used in the Ford Ranger. This is the same family as the 2.2 and will bolt in. There was a company offering conversions (also at silly money). But it should be possible for a competent mechanic to do by and large. Should be able to get a 3.2 from a Ranger being broken for spares. Or the world is your oyster depending on your budget.

6K sounds closer the mark, who's that from?
Sorry, was giving as an example of a brand new better engine, not a conversion. No idea what the Ford engine costs, but why would you pay the same or more for less power. I just cannot conceive how the company is justifying the conversion kit cost.

Yes, £6k is just the cost of a new crate LS engine. Not a conversion in a 90.

That said, I do not know how any conversion would actually cost £7k+ for the other bits.

ahh ok!
It dose seam off target, in price and i think that you're right them charging.... but i would not think they will sell many so need to recoup R&D+, over a very small amount of sales,
