So just been offered a 3.6tdv8 from a customer who has it for sale after buying a l405, currently got a 3.0td6 which is great if lacking power up hills, other than hers and turbos is there anything else to look out for? Gearbox is better I know that much. Regarding the egr and turbo issues, what is it that causes failures? Most of my driving is town based with motorway runs of about 30miles ones or twice a week and days out with family as my RR is work and family vehicle. My heart wants a 4.2 SC, but with sub contracting involving motorway the 3.6 mpg would be welcome. Any option is welcome, car iv been offered is 07, with 135,000 miles, service history with local garage. Cheers.

I was on and off looking for a tdv8 when i had my td6,
You do see some high milage 3.6 tdv8s on original turbos and engines,
Most failures seem to be related to neglected oil changes and not idling to cool after a hard run,
Inlet manifolds seem to be a common crack point,
Boost pipes splitting may also cause overboost situations which works the turbos more and more,
You also don't know how long somthing has been showing signs of needing attention and some folk are obvious,

My mothers 08 rrs was a 3.6 tdv8 and the power delivery and little burble you got exhaust was nice,
It was alot quieter engine wise then the td6,
Got about 25mpg when i used it,
She got rid of it after 6years and 50k miles of no servicing or anything (always passed it mot so in her eyes it was fine) at 78,000 miles because of an alternator and a starter and 5months later a compressor and a front wheelbearing, and a set of brake pads it was deemed unreliable,

Between the works van and near everyone around me with boost issues or fuel pressure issues or injector issues or just broken diesels I passed on the tdv8 idea and went 4.2sc

I would love v8 petrol just very few about, and with this recent sub contracting job which involves motorway work and only pence per mile v8 petrol would work out costly, 3.6 does seem decent on fuel, going to speak to them tomorrow and see if it’s turbos and egr are original. Rest of it seems ok mainly the turbos and egrs and what causes failure?

Part of me also thinks do I just keep my td6, nothing wrong with it just could do with more power and such. Especially as I don’t think there’s much market now for td6s second hand.

Nothing wrong with a TD6, of course it depends what your daily use is. I spend a significant amount of time in London traffic jams so being able to race faster between red lights is an expensive option I don't exercise, for what I want there is more than enough power even for a 2 1/2 ton beast, on the motorway the lack of refiness of the engine is quite noticable but we just turn the stereo up!

The td6 is a good motor to be fair, yes they like a rev let them rev, most of my life is on fast flowing a roads and villages 30 straight onto 60mph roads, once your upto speed they're fine,
I got 1500 for my td6 with 208,000 on the clock and 10months mot, granted i didnt pay alot but in hindsight i should have kept it and ran it into the ground, but after so 80,000 miles id done a lifetime in it,

All this support is making me re think and may just keep the td6, Nevillin- iv always thought opposite about refinement, td6 takes a bit to get up to 60mph on motorway but then settles down to what I would say is relaxed cruise, no race car but for lane one motorway plodder it’s spot on. My daily driving is towns which seem obsessed with temporary traffic lights! And general awful traffic management and road planning causing general chaos, then what used to be days out at weekends but now includes 1-2 days a week traveling motorways over the north west subcontracting, use the Rangie for both family and work vehicle.

I loved my td6 while i had it and always trusted it,
Lane one plodder with a trailer on with another range rover on aberdeen to windsor and it still had enough in it, it kicked back to 4th on a few hills and reved high but once upto pace didnt feel over working never dropped below 60mph apart from roadworks and still achived 22mpg,

Normal use the throttle needed used to keep with the flow of traffic but it could still sit with it and over if needed be

if you locked it in manual 5th 55mph and put your foot hard down to build speed it would feel more labouring then letting leaving it in D and letting it go back to 4th and rev up it liked the 2100 to 3000 mark

If financial situation allowed you to keep both short term you could try the tdv8 and see if you have the same trust in it,
Or even chance to spend a day using one see if its worth the purchase,

If you've got a good td6 you trust it may be worth keeping id happily have another, cheep for parts new and lots of second had readily available, easy as to work on, simpler electronics then the 2007>

That’s a good point about parts, nothing upto now has ever been what I’d call expensive, last job was front brakes £140 for pads, discs, wear sensor all decent brand… about £40 cheaper than a mondeo I had couple of years ago.
Good point about revs and towing, iv noticed she can shift if allowed to rev right up sounds quite good too! For a diesel . Never really towed much, other than for farther in law when his transit connect keeps breaking down, I would imagine towing with 4m strap is a lot different to trailer that’s properly coupled to the car. I did say to other half about buying a med size touring caravan for family holidays as my son is due to start school in September so would be tied to out of term times which I refuse to pay crazy costs at places at that time. Good to know the td6 would be happy with say 1-1/4 ton caravan.

Even the P38 is happy with a 1.25 ton caravan.:)
Big engines have become pretty pointless IMO given the traffic conditions.

Very true, never had a bad run from Manchester to Scottish highlands, but opposite heading down through Birmingham etc it’s just stop start constantly.
