3.0d bottom head with 2.5 head

I know it's a mission and a lot of work putting a 3.0d engine in a p38 but can the 3.0 bottom end go on the 2.5 head? And would it involve less wiring change just a suggestion I might be asking a ridiculous question if so sorry

just that with mine now needing a new engine I want to explore every option

No idea if the head will fit, even if it did, the compression ratio would most likely be wrong.
You could fit the whole 3 litre lump, not sure what is involved mechanically, but with it's own ECU it should be possible. Not for the faint hearted.

In this thread of a portuguese forum are some pics of a 3.0 in a P38:
LandMania Clube de Portugal • Ver Tópico - P38 com motor BMW 530D (E39)

He said he had to cut the sump so now the capacity is 5L instead of 6.5L.
He also had to change the turbo valve position.
He used the flywheel and clutch from the 2.5 engine.
Also used the P38 original exhaust but had to do some changes to it.
The ECM used was the one from the 3.0d.

Easier to chip the M51 and fit the HP24 box

Don't know about same BHP lighter car. You might get a surprise. Ok a gearbox that may give up if power is abused. Buts what's better a gearbox that may give up or one you know will give up?

I don't worry about it. If it's going to break then let it be.

I'm Not going to drive around worrying what's going to break next, it will only end up breaking quicker !! Lol

No point getting a range rover if your worried about things going wrong

No point getting an L322 if your worried about things going wrong
