If it were me - and depending how flush I was feeling - I'd get a recon VCU or possibly a new one as there seems to be a few new ones for around £375 at the moment.
Plus bearings of course.
If I was feeling poor I'd probably leave it off for a while.

Do you think the chances of the VCU been broke is high? I'd only really hear knocking when turning corners at low speed, all other times...noise couldn't be heard. I figured the prop was knocking in the bearings.

Well looking at that one, it hasn't been changed recently so I'd treat it as suspect. As you probably know, with the VCU it is just a matter of time and miles.
I have an L series VCU in my garage that's done about 150k miles over 9 years and it doesn't look as bad as yours!
Are you able to clamp one end in a vice to bench test it?

I was going to strip it down anyway. I'll be over the weekend most likely when I can get it. I've a heavy duty vice to test it, I'll have a look in the how to section to see if there's any tutorials to test it.

thanks :D
