Hi need a bit of advice. I'm going to look at a Defender 90 hard top 1996 300tdi
The guys asking £3650 +vat i have seen some pics looks quite gen
Its got 65000 on the clock not sure if its gen as no service history
A MOT till Nov 2010
The guy says it has a whine from the diff or somewhere wont know till i see it myself, then maybe wont know for sure
The question is what do you guys think its worth
Cheers david

year, engine type and mileage point in the right direction for that price. No one will be able to advice unless you post pics and even then you need to check that "whine". In addition, crossmember, bulkhead and chassis quality will answer your question. Lets us know what the whine sounds like and location

how can you tell summit looks gen from a pic..? and we cant see that pic?

Looks like a farm hack, which would explain the low mileage and no service history!

crawl under it to check for mud build up in the rear cross member, fuel outriggers, bulkhead and bulkhead outriggers. check the chassis thoroughly. If its been used in fields day in day out and left with mud in these places the chassis will be rotten. check and double check with a screwdriver and hammer.

Must remind myself that some folks here are...up there own arse rather than helping others...most folks start by looking in an add at a photo !!!.
So the pics suggest straight vehicle and unlikely to have seen too much off roading..to me anyway. Comes down to the points mentioned earlier and really are the crux of it. Get a feel good felling in test drive and assure yourself whine is not too costly and then for £3.5k, could be a good one. PS, if geezer is adding VAT, assume he is trader and so what warranty in place ?

Hi
Farmers do pay vat but claim it back just like i can
Their is no way i would pay the asking price not a clue what its worth though
thanks for the replys
cheers David

not all farmers do - especially those with very low turnovers, it's just not worth the extra accounting fees to be vat registered

looks a nice tidy 90 that - low miles might be due to it just being used as a run about rather than a hack, hacks tend not to have a single straight panel - even inc the vat it's potentially a very good buy

IMO

agree it looks tidy, maybe hack was too strong a word :D I would still be looking very closely at the chassis though, if its been used on a farm.

Maybe I'm wrong but i would sooner see a landrover un touched like the
I have seen some right bodged up stuff for a lot more cash all looked good on the surface
+ it has got a long mot so can not be so bad underneath i spose
i was thinking around 3k +the vat

you're right about a original landy being worth more than one coated with Britpart crap - but it's a bit pointless to speculate any further until you have physically seen it

Now that is a fact hopefully going tomorrow to have a look

was that comment just a generalization or aimed at someone in particular ?

Up for banter but get ****ed occasionally with folks just adding useless comments to threads for no benefit. So was specific in this instance, obvious where pointing I would have thought and left it behind now, moving on to the good stuff
