2nd gear crunches

Hi everybody

I recently bought a '92 RRC (2.5 VM diesel). I have changed all the oils including in the gearbox. The gearbox was working fine before the oil change, but after they changed it the 2nd gear started crunching. First they put dexron 2, later to fix sycro problem we tried 80w/90 (it was a bit better), now we tried 75/90 (bit worse that it was)

What shell I do? The previous owner said that they had put dexron 2 oil. I don't understand what could go wrong after the oil change if we put same oil in it.

Can you give any tips/suggestions?

well I am guessing its a manual from what your saying. I havnt a clue about the later boxes but the lt95 4 speed in mine uses 20w50 engine oil. ep90 would kill it apparently. I hope its not the case with yours.
 
if dexro 2 was first used after draining the baulk rings were obviously already about to go,putting other oils in will only bugger the rest
 
I don't really get why is this happening if it was working fine before we changed the oil to fresh dexro 2. It seams very weird to me.
 
it was probably only just hanging on with the help of dirty oil ,worn baulk rings is not uncommon problem 2nd gear takes the greastest stress and is usually first to wear ,suffix h (s type boxes)have compound rings on 1st/2nd and have a thrust washer that breaks giving similar fault it is an instant fault ,but both require box stripping to fix
 
hi this is a common problem with manual boxes. but its right about its just dirt and grit holding it from crunching. bin there and had the same happen to me changed oil and then i disturbed it.then the worse happens. all i do is just keep useing it until it gets so bad that you need another box thats what ive done many times.use till you cant no more.at least this way your still mobile
 
2nd gear baulk rings which are the friction part of synchro get the hardest work ,so is normal that it should show wear signs first ,fitting used boxes unless 1 year or so old is a risk it well may be nearly as worn as one your removing,nothing is certain even new parts in recon boxes can be faulty but generally replacing bearings and baulkrings would be better long term fix

Totally agree James. I have never understood why people fit unknown quality secondhand boxes when the bearings and baulkrigs are relitively cheap. And you know you have a good box at the end of it. But i suppose i look at it as you do from the point of view that stripping the box and doing the job yourself without labour costs is quite easy. Obviously some cannot do that and are at the mercy of the local garage.
