20w50?

Is 20w50 oil an appropriate oil grade for this engine model? I'm aware its on the limit of the spectrum for landy motors but for me its significantly cheaper than the other grades.

I ran my 2.5 TD on it when it was cheap in my area and it did no harm. The crack in the head was much more down to a lack of coolant I reckon ...

Yeah I ran it as I got some for free, was fine, if anything seemed to ooze out the gaskets less....

I run mine on 20w50 mineral. Pretty sure it's what Haines manual says.

I've used it for the past few years without a problem. In fact, as mentioned above, if you have any oil leaks it will probably reduce them.
