hi everyone is there anyway of updating the sat nav on the range rover aka put google maps on etc? also is there anyway to add apple carplay?

I am also looking into this.

I have a 2012 RR Sport and want to add CarPlay to it without replacing the headunit to an aftermarket one (Pioneer, Sony etc). It seems this cannot be done but I am hoping someone in here has a solution!
 
In my experience CarPlay is hit & miss. . . . . you're gonna need aftermarket stereo, but do your research first.

I have experienced several rental cars in the US that came with CarPlay. Only one worked correctly, but he others all refused to switch back to Radio after my iPhone app kicks in. For example I started off with Waze running on iPhone via CarPlay, and Radio in background. Whenever Waze gives directions audio switches over, but afterwards CarPlay insists on playing MP3's from phone rather than switching back to Radio. Same thing when calls end.

The only rental car that worked correctly was a Nissan something (can't remember what model or stereo) I rented from Hertz in November.

I also got a USB CarPlay dongle for my Android in the P38. This works well, and mirrors the iPhone screen ok, but same issue with Android radio !!

Hi pwood999

This is a useful reply. I rented a car in Germany and France, both which had CarPlay and Waze on the larger screen was great. I didn’t notice the radio issue as I was listening to Spotify both times.

How does the USB CarPlay work? I have a RR Sport (2012). Does it simply plug into the USB port in the armrest console and then you can have waze etc on the screen?
 
It's a USB Dongle specifically designed for Android Stereos.
I doubt it will work on a standard LR stereo. You will need either Sony, Pioneer or Chinese Android stereo.
 
Interesting.
Does anyone know if the factory LR RR head unit is run on Android? If so then the USB dongle will work. No idea how to find the head unit model number to check online.

LR would not have used Android in 2012, and even if they did ICS or Jellybean would not support latest apps.

Like I said if you want Carplay you will need to replace the stereo . . . . . no alternative.
