this morning I heared my engine rev high for a moment, instantly I disengaged gear and freewheeled..I thought wtf?? so I tried to engage 2nd gear again, couldn't get in it. So stopped, shut of engine and chose first gear. Pressed the clutch pedal and started the engine. Not that went fine untill I wanted to start riding again..rattling noise. When the engine is idling and clutch depressed I cant chose any gear without rattling.
After I had me and the car towed back home I tried again, just to be sure that its not a gearbox problem. I now selected reverse and released the clutch..nothing, so I guess its gone.
I've done about 3000km with the 200tdi engine, doesn't seem normal my clutch is gone already ;)
Can't find a heavy duty clutch on paddocks though. But maybe I should remove my gearbox first. GRRRR welded crossmembers! wish I thought of making them removeable when I built the whole thing..
well, any thoughs on that clutch?? thx

grts, Bram

I'm thinking it might be a gearbox problem. Have you checked to see if you have drive in 4th gear. If it will drive in 4th but no other gears then the layshaft has probably snapped. Do you have a series clutch cover? The original 200Tdi clutch cover is compatible with the seriesIII clutch release mechanism (that's what mine has). It makes sense to fit one of those because they are designed to cope with the torque of a 200Tdi. Is your clutch Britpart branded by any chance? I try to avoid Britpart stuff at all cost.

Is the accelerator pedal connected to the fuel pump with a cable? I tried mine with a linkage at first and that does not work at all well. You get a kangarooing effect beacause the engine moves on it's engine mounts when it's under load which affects the accelerator setting on the fuel pump. This obviously puts a heavy strain on the transmission - a cable operated accelerator is the way to go.

I just got the clutch out. The middle splined ring has been torn from the rest. And that while I never use full trottle, just to spare the drivetrain. Seems thats not enough..
Are there heavy duty clutches that fit a S3?

And it was not britpart, but QH-clutch with delphi cover..

All Series 3 clutches were 9.5" if i remember correctly, Which is the "Heavy duty" clutch as some Series 1's and 2's had a 9in clutch (Petrol models?)

so i guess i will order the AP-clutch from Paddocks, did a short search and I'm pretty sure they are OEMs. Brittpart is a nono then?

Hope this one lasts longer than the broken one. Dont really get it, cuz there's a lot of you driving around in V8's..what am I doing wrong or am I just unlucky?

I don't know if heavy duty clutch plates are available for series Land-Rovers, but I doubt it. I used an AP clutch plate in mine. It's been fine so far but I've done less than 3000km since I converted it. I've heard of gearbox and halshaft problems associated with 200Tdi conversions, but not clutch problems. Hopefully a different clutch plate will be OK.

good thing it wasn't the gearbox. Although I'm tempted to put in a 5speed box. Only thing is that I'll probably have to loose the 'series look' as the engine will need shifting forward. Should have been driving a 109 I guess :p
