Hia all just thought I would share a problem I've had as I thought it might help othersI have a defender 90 with a 200tdi engine
It has always been a bit down on power so a few months ago fired new gauges with a boost and egt gauge
It would only boost to around 4 bar so after much reading on tuning guides on here I had a tinker with the waste gate and fuel pump, was messing for weeks altering both and the max I could get was 6 bar boost and would smoke a lot, I even chopped a bit off the waste gate rod to shorten it further with no improvements, brought myself a boost leak tester and tested with no leaks and cleaned out the intercooler and checked all pipes still no differance, it has a k&n air filter that I have cleaned twice since I have had the car but I ordered a new one as come up cheap and swapped it over this morning and it has fixed the problem, have had to lengthen the waste gate and now running at a healthy 8 bar boost with no smoke, didn't think it was the air filter as I have cleaned it a few times but now drives like a different motor, wished I had checked the air cleaner first would have saved me loads a a time .

i see... only asking as i have a k&n myself... havent done enough miles to clean it yet. i dont think k&n would recommend petrol for cleaning the filter.. i believe their website has a guide for cleaning/reconditioning the filters which involves using their own oil to re-impregnate the filter once cleaned. without the oil, the filter isnt doing its job properly.

Maybe that's where I went wrong, never looked on there web site and a mate of mine said just wash em out with a bit a petrol,

I used to have a 3.5 rangie with twin K&N's on, a mate of mine used to supply me with an alternative oil for treating, can't remember the product name now, might have been stihl or similar. Was a direct replacement at half the cost.
