decided to change the timing belt on 200, whilst stripping the cover off the timing case i noticed water dripping from the gallery behind the water pump, it seems to be where the case joins the cylinder head, now is there a gasket that needs replacing behind there or just prise apart and use gasket seal,

also with the engine at tdc, the injection pump appears to be a tooth out judging by a painted mark someone has left on the sproket, so should i assemble it as it was, or put pump on correct timing marks, incidently the engine seemed lazy at low revs with the pump set as it was,

Where it meets the block ( timing cover ) can be sealed with gasket sealant but you're likely to gain an oil leak unless it's properly sealed, the crank produces oil behind this case which runs down into the sump again. Just to add a pain to it, it's also tied down with 3 bolts through the ally ladder on the bottom as well as directly to the block, with all that pulling n pushing, it's not the best design imho..

As for timing, it's up to you, you can run her without the timing cover on for a short period ( waterpump wont be bolted on ;) ) to gauge if she's running rough or not. If you're doing this with the radiator out, then make a loop on the oil cooler pipes otherwise you'll end up with oil everywhere! ;)

water way on block with 3 holes needs a new gacket if leaking whether its disco or defender as block to timing case has gasket and so leaving gasket out for water way would mean bending cover ,timing needs resetting properly ensuring cam and crasnk are spot on the adjusting pump by holding clockwise against the pin while tightening the 3 pulley bolts using consecutive sma;;er pins ie drill bits starting at 9.5 while holding pump nut clockwise can advance pump for optimum timing position just before diesel knock

thanks for replies chaps, took the sprockets and timing case off in the end as i couldnt bear the thought of putting it together with silicone in it and it still leaking, so now waiting for parts to arrive. As for the 3 bolts through the sump they took some finding, and James i may come back to you when its together regards timing, cheers

james do you know the part numbers for the 2 gaskets between the timing case and block and waterway and block, its a defender 200tdi

Just as a caution, be careful when tightening the 3 bolts from below as they can easily cross thread into the timing case
